I'm using WinAmp Pro at the moment, but I'm looking for something that will give me better audio quality. The minimum I need is a library function. I don't need skinability and visualizations. Just good sound.

What player do you recommend?
Thanks,

Foobar 2000 though the library feature isn't the greatest it sounds marginally better and supports gapless mp3s and .ogg, it is also very much unbloated which is nice.To be honest with you though its the media you're playing that is the weak link probably, followed by your soundcard amp, speakers and then cabling. Really for good sound quality you do need to have a seperate system imo. Hmmmm now if only I had a few thousand dollars handy..............

The stereo is back home. Over here I make due with my laptop and Sennheiser cans.
True, the media is mostly rips at 192 so you can't expect much. However, I still think there must be something better for mp3 playback. I tried Foobar, but we didn't get along well.
Thanks for the tips,

I don't think a piece of software exists that can improve quality that just isn't there in the first place.

how do you find Winamp when playing normal CD's? For me it's fine, as long as you have some nice speakers.

The fans of mp3 say that the only sound lost is inaudible to the human ear....
You might want to try FLAC files instead. It's a Lossless Audio Codec, hence the name, and some music torrent sites use mostly that codec. Try http://btmusic.org:2710/index.php for lots of albums in that format. They take up far more space than mp3 though, so be warned.
Also that site only allows the use of a certain few clients, so be sure to read the faq before you start to use it.

By the way.....I hope to God you're not listening using the speakers that came free with the computer.....

Quality is fine I guess. I just thought there might be something out there that I was missing.

Thanks for the tips. I get most of my new music in FLAC format from Pedro's already. I use WinAmp to play the FLAC files too.

well beyond that, I'm not really sure what you can do. Obviously with the Sennheisers you are serious.
I really like Winamps media library, especially the way you can create your own categories using the various paramaters to make playlists etc. I own an iPod but I find winamp a lot more user freindly than iTunes

If you do find a better player, be sure to let us know here.

I installed the MAD MP3 Decoder for WinAmp. Not sure if it has improved the sound or not. If anyone is interested, you can find more about it here.

Does anyone have any experience with .ogg (Ogg Vorbis) files? ITunes doesn't seem to support this format yet and I'd like to be able to play it on my IShuffle. Converting these files to mp3 files is one route, but I'm not seeing any free converters on the web.

Winamp plays ogg files but that won't help you with your iPod.
Don't know about any free converters. Search at download.com.
If you know anything about bittorrent you can download a program that will do it.
I usually use Nero to convert flac or ogg files to mp3.

I hadn't thought about Nero, which I already had. I was able to make this work. Thanks.
