I am on my 5th year at my university. Another teacher where I work was pushed out after 5 years, by being told that their was a 1% he would be rehired, so he ended resigning a bit early and took a new uni job. I guess that will be my fate as well, so I am planning a job search this fall. The admistration has seemed hopeful about my staying here in my conversations with them, but I think the axe will fall. I would like to stay, and work by contract as now, but I don't think it will happen, but I can hope.

I ended up doing six years at that university. Could have done more, but really needed fresh air. At a new university now.

Shoosh,
Did it...
BA - English / English Ed
MA - TESOL
PhD (soon) - Applied Linguistics
Wonder if I'd ever (assuming we go back to Korea) get full professorship / tenure like the Koreans. Would be nice as we've a lot to go back to.
Will know soon enough, I suppose.

Foreign scholars merit equal status
The foreign professor -- colleague or hired hand?
Foreign professors... tend to be treated as hired hands, without academic standing, and lacking the possibility of career advancement or tenure. They must submit to yearly contracts (compensated at a rate only 60 percent of their Korean peers) while walled off from the permanent Korean faculty who benefit from travel, research funding, sabbaticals, etc. Moreover, when hundreds of Korean scholars enjoy such perks at American and other foreign universities, something is obviously amiss.

Real Reality,

Thanks for the congrats...not to mention being faithful in posting pertinent (and legally sound) information.

Though it does narrow the fields, the E-1 restrictions for getting full-time professorship is attended to by only public/national universities....so working at a private univ. (my past gig) is open season.

To verify I called my ex-boss...he says that he'd hire me on at the same rate as a Korean colleague....should a position in my field open.

Once I get this all squared away and my little red stamps for proof this can be had...I'll post the 'how-to' here.

A teacher at our university was promised tenure if he were to get a Masters degree. He was a certified teacher, and had a lot of experience as an ESL teacher. He declined, because he was sick of ESL. He was working in the ESL buisness as a stopgap until he could find something better.
