Soldier Dies in Self-Immolation
A 23-year-old private went to a fiery death in a chemicals storeroom at an Army unit near the DMZ on Sunday, the same day another private went on a shooting rampage that left eight comrades dead and wounded two driven out of his mind by bullying from a comrade.

Why am I not surprised he was someone's whipping boy? Well, I hope this incident will produce a public outcry that will force the Korean government to crack down on the underlying culture of bullying within the ranks of its armed forces.

I really pity most of the guys I see going off to military service. The average guy's upbringing here leaves them woefully underprepared for what they have to face.

Almost every guy I spoke to in Korea knew someone who went off the rails or attempted suicide while there.

Maybe they should introduce short military introduction courses for kids while they are in middle and high school to prepare them a little better.
