I use Firefox and my browser has been hi-jacked but then again it's mostly the university network to blame, and I can't firewall it without losing my downloading torrents....I now use Panda Titanium which seems to run a tight ship. haven't had any problems since installing it anyway.

Something that could fix your IE problems:

Download Spywareblaster . Install it and look in the IE tools area and click the button that changes everything to the recommended settings and 'enable all protection'. Also, start running the popup blocker which is now integrated into IE or the get google toolbar.

Last, but not least, get Spybot or Spyware Sweeper running on your computer. Both of these programs have modules to protect your computer from background activeX and other other installs. In spybot, the modules are called Teatimer and IEtracker and in Spysweeper, it is tied to the actual program. Get one of these running on your computer and quick.

I am also wondering if you are running a 2-way firewall. A firewall that blocks incoming and outcoming traffic, which you disallow, will make all the difference in the world if you ever get infected with a trojan, dialer, or anything else. Firewalls essentially prevent your data from leaving your computer and from other computers to make connections with any port that you haven't allowed. GET ONE.

Man...a new rule:

If you insist on using IE and you have spyware/hijack/web bug trouble, it's no help for you! (a 'la Seinfeld's "soup nazi")
