A lot of teachers that post on these boards come from those cities or the nearby areas.

You would have to ask them what is special about their cities.

I never understand how they get these results. I don't understand how Moscow could be more expensive than Oslo. Is it based on cost of living and some factor of income over tax etc. or is it absolute cost of living?

I've always heard Reykavik is very expensive; I've heard Icelanders go to Norway for cheaper things. I wonder what size you have to be to be considered a major city.

I've been to Moscow a few times and it costs a fortune to buy anything there.

Seoul seems a little too high though. I think Gangnam must be skewing the figures.

If you have a awful lot of free time the mercer website explains exactly how they calculate things. I didn't read it though.

I knew that it would be expensive but I never thought it would be that high up in the list!! Shocked It has been in a lot of lists recently especially in Europe and it's always been in the top 3.

I found this in an old article since I didn't know where to go on the Mercer page:

http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2002/07/08/1025667113599.html?oneclick=true

Quote:
The annual Mercer survey, which covers 144 cities, measures the comparative cost of more than 200 items in each location, including housing, food, clothing, household goods, transport and entertainment.

The data is used to assist multinational companies in determining compensation allowances for expatriate workers.

Apperently, Dublin was ranked 73 in 2002. How could it rise that much in 3 years? Well, I kind of know how but it's still incredible.

When I was down in the South of Ireland last year I was surprised to hear that house prices had tripled recently. The country got rich in a hurry.

Depends what you mean by special. Special as in why are they so expensive? Well, Toronto is expensive because of rents, housing prices, and car insurance.

I think that you will find that these figures are based on an expat standard of living......which translates into western style accomodation and buying western foodstuffs.

To visit absolutely. I paid $300 U.S. to stay at a midrange hotel in Osaka.

To visit? Absolutely not! Tons of motels for under $50 a night, including some decent ones near the nambu bus terminal. Food's cheap. Taxis are amazingly low priced.

Perhaps to live there: property values.

MUCH MORE expensive than Seoul to visit as a tourist. Not even close.
