I'm looking into buying one of these, so I have a use for my TV, can play DVDs on a bigger screen than my laptop and play a few games.

Now I got some questions. The tv the school provided me with is archaic. No remote, dodgy controls etc. etc. I'm not rich so can someone tell me what is the least technological way of getting an xbox running?

The second question is can i buy "backup" games on DVDs at Yongsang????? The box I'm looking at is modded.

Ta!

Chris

I've never owned a console system, but while shopping for pc games at EB I overheard one of the salesmen (salesboys? they're all under 19) give advice to a customer that basically was- don't use your console to play DVDs on a regular bvasis- very bad for the console.

I have no idea whether this has any hint of truth to it, but I am curious. It sounded like spurious logic to me, I think it was something to do with wearing out components or overheating or something. Not sure if it applied to xbox or PS2 or both.

I heard it was a bad idea for PS2s, but I've never heard of that for XBox. Why would playing DVDs be more wearing than playing game discs?

Anyway, to connect to the TV you need to have three inputs- a yellow one for the picture, and a red and white for the left/right sound. Basically if you can connect a VCR or DVD, then you should be able to connect an X-Box (although possibly not both at the same time), depending on your TV.

If the box is modded, then the guy you buy it from will probably offer to put games on your hard drive. No need to even have a DVD, just pick the game you want to play and it works.
This method is dirt cheap, and they'll load up quicker than from the disk.

You can buy "Backup" games too, if you don't want to haul your XBox all the way to Yongsan for example- it's pretty funny when you tell them which one you want and the guy runs off to actually burn it for you.

There are alot of myths out there about burning out your console, but to my knowledge the only real one is smoking. Smoking near a PS2 f's it up.

Your TV will probably have RCA jacks that you can plug your X-Box outputs into. If the TV is older, then it might have an RF connector, in which case you'll have to find an RF adaptor for your X-Box. I saw one at a Wal-Mart here in Korea. I haven't been to Yongsan yet, but you might be able to find one there as well. If your TV has only two RCA jacks, one for audio and one for video, then you can get the RCA y-adapter (two female inputs to one male output) for the audio at E-Mart, or at an electronics shop, or even one of those cheapo variety stores that sell all kinds of junk (I got a y-adapter at one of those places once).

games have loading times, whereas dvd's are one continious replay... thus your lens tends to wear out alot quicker if you are watching loads of dvds.... afterall they are gaming consoles, made for playing games... plus dvd players are so cheap these days

Buy a new TV with RCA plugs (or even S-video or HDTV) or buy an RF adapter.

My xbox recently just stopped working for no apparent reason. I watche d alot of dvd's on it, and also watched burned divx's and avi's so dunno if that made a difference.

I don' t think it's the lens though, as the machine turns on fine but nothing appears on the tv. Maybe I 'burned' the "video out" out? Tried a new able too, but nothing.
I haven't had a chance to get up to Yongsan yet so if anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

I would suggest geting a moded xbox they are great. I got tons of games and apps for playing divx, and dvd's and such. If you have a computer and internet I would suggest just downloading the games you want thats what I am doing. Its quite easy.

Can someone give more info on this place to get a mod installed?

I am not in Seoul, but would like to head up and have this done.

A few questions.

Do they do it while you wait?

Is there an option of which mod you get? (I know there is one mod that has a switch, so you can still use your Xbox Live feature)

How much are we talking for a mod? (I already have my console)

Cheers,

GRich
