College head held captive by students
A university president was hospitalized yesterday after being held captive for a week by several dozen dance students, who were demanding that the dance department be preserved. Woo Tong-ki, 53, president of Yeungnam University in South Gyeongsang province, was taken off campus in an ambulance after he told the students he was having trouble breathing and moving his leg.
For the past week, about 50 students in the university's dance department had held Mr. Woo in a second-floor conference room in the university's international exchange building. Students guarded the building lobby around the clock in shifts. They were protesting a plan to merge the dance department with the gymnastics department. Such captive-taking by students is rare, though not unheard of.
Mr. Woo had not been able to change clothes in several days, and had not been able to wash, though administration officials, who were allowed to see him, brought him wet towels. But before his release, he said calling the police was never considered. "It would only stimulate the students," said Mr. Woo. "And it's not proper for a teacher to call the police to accuse his own students."
The students vowed to continue on-campus protests....

Interesting take on kidnapping/personal captivity/hostage taking, over here: http://oranckay.net/blog/?theDate=200506031

Anyway, it seems to me it's one of those behavioral traits in Korea to think you can borrow someone in an incident already set in motion without it being a terrible crime. Naturally, when foreigners are involved that is not the understanding on the receiving end. |
Read the rest, it is a great article.
That said, I'm sure the president didn't suffer from a lack of eye candy for those days. |
