If I avoid western fast food, it's easy to get by on 3k or 4k a day for food. Maybe some meat on a stick after exercising and kimbap for lunch (dinner is provided by the school, usually rice or kimbap). I just bought 14 bananas for 2k which will be snacks for a week. Orange juice or whatever, divided by the number of days it lasts, really cheap. Thank goodness the food is so good here.

Drinking and smoking are the really expensive things, and Western food.

I notice that in different countries, the currency denominations either encourage me to spend or encourage me to save. In Korea, spending 5000 of something for a McD meal seems outrageous. In Taiwan spending the same amount but in NT (150NT?) on something seems quite thrifty, because the 100NT bill seems like a dollar bill to my subconscious.

Therefore, Korea is good for my bank account!

man, you guys are thrifty. i didn't realize what a relatively big spender i am. i usually go through about $1,500,000 a month. and i don't even buy anything frivilous like electronics or dvds or dishwashing soap. yeah, it's all going straight to my liver. but frankly, i have no plans to save any money at all in korea. and i'm right on target so far. if i do everything right, i'll crawl out of this country on my last 1000 won.

oh yeah, and like to think i speak korean as often as possible, but sometimes i'm just too lazy.

I dont drink that much at all, But I eat healthy so therefore its going to cost me.
I go through about 300k a week, but put gym fees etc on my credit card.
The thing that costs me the most is meat like chicken and beef, also buying packs of tuna in spring water for aout 2k a shot takes it to 15k a week, it all adds up.

I speak Korean when I need to to get something done, or if I see the other person is really uncomfortable with English, but I'm a long, long way from fluent.

How much do I spend? some months- close to a mil, others, around 500,000. This month I've been lying kind of low, saving for a trip next month, and have spent a little under that.

Wow, how do you live under less than 700,000 won per month? I find 30,000 easy to spend doing not much any old day.

Well, my rent is 325,000, bills about 70,000, cell phone about 60,000, regular daily spending money almost always under 10,000. So, that is about that... but then there are also trips to the market where I might spend 15,000 in one shot on veggies (but that's only maybe 2 times a month), and there are also trips out of town... but mostly, especially if I take my bike everywhere I go, I'm hovering at a little under 800,000.

As to "how" I can do this... well, necessity. I am working a bare minimum of off the books jobs and studying full time.

'One shot! One shot! One shot!' --- Don't you ever find yourself in wacky situations like that? I do, and I don't even seek them out. But it made me want to ask you, what's your booze & cigs bill running? (and why do I think I know the answer without asking you? Wink )

This is for me, too...I would say about 250K on the expenses but I have a cell phone with a monthly service fee and SkyLife.

Best Regards,

NK.

Yes, you guessed it, no cigarettes and no booze... well, nearly no booze, but the itsy bit I drink is so weak, and not even very regular, and it still is calculated in my 10,000 won per day...
