I had an enlightening conversation with a student the other day.

She told me that having returned from the US after studying there for a number of years - she did a high school test at her new Korean HS and was amused at getting one of the questions wrong.

The question? What's good about Korea?

She wrote about what she thought was good (not sure what).

She was wrong as the correct answer included that Korea has 4 seasons!!

absolutely floored me as it honestly seems that Koreans are ignorant that other countries, likewise, have 4 seasons!!

Interesting that a countries "good" points must be taught in school.......

Frankly speaking, a lot of foreigners don't know that Japan only has 4 seasons because it stole 3 of them from Korea.

When my students say that Korea has 4 seasons I always turn to them and say, "every country has 4 seasons - Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter!!" I know that they mean "4 distinct seasons" but I hate that they have been brainwashed in school to believe that Korea is sooooo perfect.

A real example of lunacy. One of my fellow teachers remarked, "wow, Korea's so great isn't it? England, USA, and Canada don't have four seasons." She is in her late forties. Shocked

Does England have 4 seasons? I thought it was just rainy and cold all the time.

Korea does NOT have four seasons.

There are SIX seasons in all.

There's also the rainy season of the next few weeks. Then a month of sunshine. Followed by the typhoon season. Six distinct seasons. Unless the summer is defined as rainy-sunny-stormy, which would be three subseasons in a season. Not exactly distinct.

And there's LESS seasons in some parts.

There's a quarter million Koreans on this island who don't see snow all winter, and north of us is Busan, where millions see, like, two days of snow I think, not exactly distinctly winter weather.

Korea's no different than many other countries in seasonal distinctness.

Parts of Korea might have a distinctly winter season, but then again, parts of Canada and America have four distinct seasons too.

Why are Koreans so adamant that they alone have four distinct seasons? And why hasn't someone put together obvious meterological evidence to the contrary?

It's something I don't understand. I just shake my head. I don't get it.

I really don't think Korea has four distinct seasons. Winter in Korea isn't very distinct. Seems a lot like late fall or early spring. Real cold, and snow isn't around in much abundance. It seems like New York, New England and parts of Cananda have four, 'more distinct' seasons, than Korea does. Yeah, I know I know I making it into a pissing contest now, but Koreans love to shot themselves in the foot.

I tell my students that Korea has two distinct seasons. They have 51 weeks of summer and one week of winter. I base this theory on the FSF - Foreigner Sweat Factor. This applies more to the southern regions...
