Recently I got a bad virus in my computer and had to reformat my drives and reinstall the software for everything.

Ever since this happened, my videos run strangely- they go a bit fast and sort of hiccup- its jerky and parts of dialogue disappear.

My helpful friends and neighbors (thanks Poet Wink ) have helped me through the whole process, but this has us all stumped.

Do you mean with Windows Media Player?

You could download and try a different video player.

I don't understand why people always reformat when they get a virus. The days of monkey viruses are gone.

It may be a codec problem. VLC player...give it a google and a spin. See how that goes.

Alternately...

How much RAM do you have? Do you know anything about your graphics card? Did you re-install all of your drivers? Graphics, sound, etc... ?

Umm, because we tried everything else possible, and the computer shut itself down with the blue screen and warning of damage everytime it was booted up.

I've tried different video players. Thanks, Eamo, for the suggestion, though.

Plenty of RAM, and we reinstalled everything. Argh!

Would it be a codec problem on a wide variety of videos, including CD's?

Demo's call on the drivers is what I'd check first. You say you installed everything. Did you reinstall video drivers for either mainboard or video card depending on what you have?

I believe it was for the video card, but we are now getting to stuff I know too little about. My guess was the driver, but we did install all of the software, so I don't know where the glitch could be.

I was hoping someone would say "aha, I know exactly what that is". Since I lack the knowledge to answer anymore questions than I have, I guess I will just say thanks and haul the computer back to where I bought it this Saturday.

Thanks for the help.

If the guy knows little about video cards, you may be confusing him here.

Protection first and foremost should be a FIREWALL, not an antivirus program. Obviously, both are recommended but the antivirus program is going to do squat to prevent people from getting in through the back door. Heck, it may not even detect someone installing a key logging thing.

So, to stop people getting into the machine Arrow Firewall
To stop viruses from infecting your machine once they're in Arrow Antivirus

Just to nip that common misconception in the bud before it starts Wink

If only getting a virus were so cryptic, probably less folks would get them. In most cases, computers become infected via the right hand of the user by double-clicking.

You seem to be confusing installing a virus with being hacked.

I had that problem myself when I re-formatted my HD. The computer would keep rebooting or working sluggishly while playing videos. I opted to re-format my HD again and everything worked fine after that. Sorry, can't help you other than that.

PS. I tried adding codecs and re-setting my video settings and nothing worked.

Yeah, I do know that, and about firewall protection too. It seems my free subscription to McAfee had just run out, and I was a day slow in subscribing. My bad, but it happened so damned fast! (McAfee was down less than 2 days!)

I shoulda bought an Apple!

Thanks, Fubar, I have a friend going with me to the computer place on Saturday, and hopefully the guy who built this can sort it out. I did buy an external hard drive, so I back things up, as I am sure he will reformat things again.

First of all, if you haven't bought a new virus package -- don't!

Use www.avast.com as it's free and works beautifully. Been using it for months on several computers here and at home. I love it!

Also, the new Windows Media Player gives me odd problems too. I really feel Windows Media Player has gone downhill and become less compatible with a lot of what's out there. Demo's advice about VLC Media Player is good, but I find that one has problems playing some files at the correct speed (it speeds up, then slows down, etc.).
