Am so pissed off at my school.

For the 2nd time in a week, they have neglected to inform us that classes were starting early. Last time it was an hour. This time it was 10 minutes (right at the beginning of the day). So what happens? Of course, I (and the other foreigners) are late to class after some other Korean teacher has to come to our classroom and hush our students.

It's embarrasing, and frankly, it's got me really pissed off!

We have an "advisor" that is supposed to help us, but she never does a damn thing.

I and the other teachers have complained several times, but nothing has changed. We've got evaluations coming, and I can see some of my students writing, "Teacher is late to class... lazy teacher!"

ARGH!

Yep! Happens at my school all of the time.

Forunately for me it's not a "classes start early" thing. It's usually more like, "your classes are cancelled today" thing, so I don't really mind Wink

But yeah, there's a definite lack of knowledge sharing going on here.

Never ever had the "oh, we forgot to tell you classes started early today," but I get the "oh, we forgot to tell you X class is cancelled today" all the time at my high school.

I used to ask the students about upcoming class events as students are by far the best source of info in a Korean school, but lately I have liked to be pleasantly surprised with a nice little break in the middle of the day that I hadn't counted on.

So your job performance is based on student evaluations Gollum\Derrek?

When I inquired as to why the classes were beginning 10 minutes early, the answer was, "Because the students want to leave 10 minutes earlier in the day."

I have yet to hear of another school following such a policy.

Never had Gollum's situation happen to me personally, but it's happened to my co-workers at my current job. Boss changes the schedule so a person needs to be there an hour earlier but neglects to tell said individual. When that person acts surprised about his new schedule, she says, "Well, you always come a little early, so I thought it'd be the same today."

Argh...

happened to me yesterday.

I went to my first class at 10AM and I was 10 minutes late. I asked why? They told me that today the classes will start and finish 10 minutes early so the teachers can play volleyball.

Sure enough there were teachers from 3 or 4 other schools all gathered in front of the school and they played volleyball from 2PM to 5PM or so I assume...I took the opportunity to go home and nap for a couple of hours Very Happy

Sorry but this is a bit off the subject. About the volleyball, are Koreans that crazy about it? I went for a look around an elementary school yesterday and the vice principal told me that the school only cares about volleyball. I was thinking more along the lines of Taekwondo or football but volleyball? Is it really that popular?

Then he told me that I had to play volleyball to be a teacher (jokingly) as they play the local school a lot and they have to win. Rolling Eyes I was trying hard not to laugh in his face and besides they don't have much of a choice as the government decide who teachs there not them.

Happened here today due to a listening test. Half-way through my supplementary class in the morning the VP came on the horn and said that all regular classes will commence 10 mins earlier. That gave me 10 mins to finish up this reading lesson we were doing. It didn't get done, so guess we will be behind for tomorrow's class.

The joys of teaching in the publci setting. I just roll with the punches these days and ask questions to the teachers to keep myself better informed.
