A few years before Cortez landed in Mexico, another expedition had come and gone, leaving behind two shipwrecked Spaniards: Aguilar and Guerrero. The Mayas on the Yucatan took them as slaves.
Aguilar remained a slave. Attempted to keep a Christian calendar, prayed for rescue, picked up the native tongue by osmosis. It took several years before Cortez's expedition would arrive, but he waited for it every day.
Guerrero went native. Became fluent in the native tounge, married a Maya woman, got tattoed, pierced, had kids, became a Maya war captain, apparently spoke in council.
When Cortez landed he secured Aguilar's release. Aguilar was very pleased, to say the least, and he helped Cortez as a translator in the Conquest.
Guerrero not only refused to join Cortez's expedition. He advised the Maya to resist and he even led a doomed assault against his former countrymen. It is not known what happened to him, but it is assumed that he died.
How do you see yourself? As an Aguilar or a Guerrero?

I'm a Jorge all the way.
Jorge Sinloa de las Damas Gordas y Feas of the Cortes expedition volunteered to stay behind and 'guard' the women and the gold whilst the other hombres pushed the big conquista onwards; They were never seen again, but rumours persisted that Jorge had in fact co-discovered, along with S. Cabeza de Vaca, the fountain of youth somewhere in the vicinity of modern-day Del Boca Vista... |

In ten years I never met anyone who I would even remotely consider a Guerrero. Not even people who married a Korean. |

As pointed out in the OP, the culture doesn't really allow for any Guerreros. The few examples I can think of all seem to have an aura of novelty about them: the french chick, the german chef, the american lawyer with the Kyongsan accent (sorry all the names escape me). |

My Cuban friends convinced me that Latinas gordas no son feas, pero, los damas flacas son todos feas. (Please excuse the poor Spanish grammar!) |

They're almost all hot, dude, except for the gordas. It's the dominating, insanely jealous, matriarchical tendencies that make them unattractive after you get into a relationship with them... |
They are not ALL hot! I've seen some pretty fugly chollitas running around.
Plus, they're not all dominating, insanely jealous, and matriarchical...some are oversensitive, puritanical, and elitist. And they sure like that gringo visa.
As far as the initial conversation goes: I am a "Pinochet" |

Me too. That Eddie Guerrero is such a stud, if only he would reply to my emails.

Hadn't the Mayan civilisation already disappeared a couple hundred years before Cortez arrived?
I'm mostly Aguilar aside from the desperation to leave. Praying everyday would be so taxing. I would probably put more effort into 'going native' if I felt I was going to be here for the long term. Then again Guerrero died. Does that say anything? |

Yes, it teaches us to carefully weigh options when making important decisions that will definitely affect our lives. |

I've met some Europeans who've done this.
I think the Europeans tend to go "native" much more since they're either students or working in a K-company. |
