|
|
Does anyone have any scoop on:
1) W Language Academy? (also referred to as EWHA)
2) More specifically, W English Academy in "Gyeyang-Dong,Bupyeong, Mid city between Seoul and Incheon".
3) Life in Gyeyang-Dong?
More info:
- the offer came through a recruiter named Benny at eteachersbank.com
- the school's director is named Brent Ji
Searching around on Dave's didn't bring up anything on W Language Academy or EHWA. A Google search brought me to the W Language Academy homepage:
http://www.kiznara.co.kr/about_ewha/my_campus/my_campus.asp
... but its all in Korean.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks,

I work for the big dubya, aside from now having possibly the worst name for an academy that I've seen (although TOSS across the street is a solid contender, tossers) it's a good school. I can't say about your particular branch as I'm in Pyeongchon (near Anyang). It's good for paying on time and things like that, the textbooks are all provided (although not always great, most are good).
I'll try to find out today how much variation there is from branch to branch and how much is established at head office. Our school is great though if that's any help. Very relaxed, good atmosphere, good kids. |

I agree with everything said above. I also work with that academy, but near Gangnam. I know one of the teachers at my branch worked at another one before...I will check to see if it's the one you mentioned. As far as I know, you would be ok taking a position with them. A girl that just finished her contract received everything she was supposed to (return fare, bonus, etc). But again, branches...even with franchises can be different from one to another. I will let you know if I find out anything. |

Hey there...I talked to a few people at work, and everyone said the franchises of W they know of, are all about the same. I can't speak specifically about the one that you are applying for...but from the ones they know of, there aren't any big problems... |

I used to live in Gyeyang. About 2 years ago. Nice kind of area. Very new. There is both a walmart and carrefour and they were building a movie theatre.
You can catch the express bus and been in seoul in about an hour or so. |

I second CLG's comments about Gyeyang-Gu. The neighborhood itself is great. It's not halfway between Seoul and Incheon, though. It's in Incheon. By subway it's about an hour and 15 minutes from downtown Seoul, but by express bus, 40-50 minutes.
However...
I know someone who worked at Ewha in Gyeyang Gu, Incheon. That place is bad news. He had to fight for two months to get his last month's pay and severance, and he never did get his airfare from them.
Don't work for them. |

Son, how long ago did your friend work there? Maybe its under different directors now..

I certainly do not fancy moving half way around the world only to end up living near another Walmart! ugh. Is there anything within say 2 hours of Seoul that is somewhat more rural or old and beautiful per se? |

My friend finished his contract at Ewha about 2 years ago. I do not know what has or has not happened to management since then. It's your call, but I can't imagine what they could possibly be offering you that would make it seem worth the risk of working at a school that has already shafted at least one teacher on pay. So be it. Consider yourself warned.

Living near a Wal-Mart may not seem attractive to you now, but there are few places in Korea where you can find as wide a variety of Western products. I never particularly wanted to shop at Wal-Mart back home either, but living abroad changes things a bit.
That's just me, though. Maybe you're different.

Rural or old and beautiful? Ah. It's a good thing you asked, north Incheon is definitely none of the above. If you want to teach in rural Korea you should have plenty of options. So many that it would be hard to even try to list them here. Gangwon-do province is gorgeous and it shouldn't be too hard to find hogwon jobs there. Check Van Islander's posts about positions currently available on Geojedo, too.
A lot of Westerners are intimidated by the idea of living in the country, so if that's what you want you should be able to set yourself up with a good position. Very likely working shorter hours and living in a bigger apartment, too.
Best of luck! |
