|
|
New York film critics have been barred from tonight's (Thursday) premiere of Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds, leading New York Times columnist Campbell Robertson to wax poetic -- Yeatsian, really -- to speculate whether the snub might have something to do with star Tom Cruise's Scientology beliefs, or last weekend's incident in which a bogus reporter squirted him with a phony microphone, or his bizarre behavior on Oprah Winfrey's talk show. ("The press lacks all conviction, while TOM CRUISE/Is full of passionate intensity, /Really, really passionate intensity.") Meanwhile, film critics in Germany threatened Wednesday to boycott War of the Worlds if they are required to sign an agreement not to publish a review before its June 29 release date in that country. While an informal agreement exists between U.S. critics and studios to withhold publication of reviews of new movies until the day of their premieres, no such agreement exists in Germany. In a statement released Wednesday, the Association of German Film Critics said that the studio demand represents "scandalous P.R." and "obstructs the press from its constitutionally guaranteed rights."

You're suggesting a lot of stuff there.
Care to make a few succinct points. |

Okay...but what?!!
There's like 5 different points in that article (horribly written). What would you like people to comment on? |

The marketing for the movie has been great: no shots of the aliens or tripods -- which will make people curious as hell.
Perhaps the pseudo-agreement with US critics (there's a mostly spoiler-free review here) is an effort to maintain the mystery.

The very early word out there is that this movie will be the first BOMB for Spielberg. This is why they don't want early reviews.
Movie officially cost 140million but estimates are that it was over budget by 60-70 million. The studio is worried. |

Link(s) please. Based on the sparse info I've read about the film, it sounds amazing, a return to form for Spielberg.
This from www.chud.com:

On June 29th, Earth goes to war.
Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds, an updating of the classic HG Wells novel, is the blockbuster to beat this summer. My review is embargoed until release, but I don't think that Paramount is going to mind too much if I tell you that this is a damn good movie. Nothing I had seen had led me to believe that the film would be as good as it is. War of the Worlds is scary, smart and just plain well made.

I think perhaps the press embargo is to divert attention away from Tom Cruise and his apparent psychosis.
I mean, really, does anyone seriously think Spielberg will screw up a movie about aliens?
When does it open in Korea?

I read that first review posted.
My favorite line was this one:

Yes, funny how alien invasions can do that. |

They do this sort of thing when they know it's going to bomb.
I saw some more previews of it in the theater just before "Batman" last night.
They kept showing the same shot of this bridge flipping over.. must have shown it 4 times in the preview.
Gosh, they are sure proud of that shot.
I wasn't very impressed by the preview. |

They don't have press screenings when the studio expects the movie will garner negative criticsm.
WotW is having screenings -- they just want the press to withhold their reviews until the movie opens.

Apparently the movie opened in Japan last week. Anyone who has an account to post of the Japan Job Forum want to post and ask how the movie was? I'm sure a few people there have seen it.

It reminds me of the marketing for Signs, which I hated.
It's HG Wells though- as long as you don't tamper too much with the basic story how wrong could you go?
So maybe a bomb for Speilberg is still a modest success by anyone else's standards. |

I loved 'Signs' (I realize it's a "hate it or love it" movie). The reason the aliens weren't shown during the promotion of that movie was because it seriously would have spoiled the ending. In the case of WotW, the tripods and aliens are featured very prominently throughout the picture.
Does anyone really think that Spielberg will stick to the original ending of the Wells story, though? I kind of hope he doesn't.
*Spoilers*
In the original novel, the aliens are defeated by the common cold virus.

The reviews are coming in, and they are mostly very favorable. What worries me is that some critics have mentioned that the film is perfect up until the end, which has a tacked-on "Hollywood style" denouement.
I thought Spielberg's 'Minority Report,' was a classic upon first viewing, but after multiple watchings have come to loathe the half-assed way it's wrapped up at the end. I hope this isn't similar.
Is it opening tomorrow in Korea?

Crap, have to wait until the 7th of July.
The aliens will have won by then.
