Did someone already mention the goofy Dokdo/anti-Japan ad playing in the movie theaters before movies? The one with the transformer.

I wish someone would record that one onto video and circulate it in Japan via internet. I'm sure that would go over well. Especially the stereotypical geeky Japanese-looking cartoon characters which reminded me a lot of anti-Japan propaganda films shown during WWII.

The "East Sea" ad showing a bunch of school kids in Korea "schooling" a western classroom with letters was downright goofy, too. The Western kids seemed so happy to be corrected by the Koreans.... "Oh, thank-you for correcting us!" I laughed, knowing that kids in the West would probably shrug their shoulders and say, "Yeah, whatever -- who cares!"

i also didn't know that an expidition was set out to settle dokdo...yet it looks like they've ended up in the arctic...hmm...

Hmmm... I think I'll give it a try:

On my travels along the southern coast, I've been impressed by the sight of the bridges to Korean islands.
They are often scenic.

To Jindo island



To Namhae island (from the west - I prefer the other angle, coming from the east, looks like the Golden Gate bridge put in Norway, pic unavail.)

To Wando (after seeing many beautiful island bridges I was a bit disappointed at how unremarkable this one was to experience)



The Tongyeong-to-Geoje Island bridge:

Billions of dollars is going into the construction of the Busan-Geoje link for relatively marginal economic gain (shipbuilding and tourism on the island) until one considers studies and reports which show Geoje Island the best place for a Japan-Korea tunnel/bridge system, and plans have already been formally drawn up and presented, but put on the backburner by Korean politicians well aware that public sentiment is against such longterm plans at this moment. Korea is famous for building capacity way before there is a demand for it. Geoje Island is a gold mine for someone wishing to invest now in land for future gain. The property values will jump as 2009 nears and go sky high once Korea and Japan finalize a link (which could take 20-50 years admittedly. But the Japanese consider it "inevitable", showing they have the mindset and political will to make it happen once the Korean government has the courage to do so).

Those bridges are gaudy, ugly, and out of keeping with the landscape. I really dislike them- along with a lot of other ill-considered construction here that is little more than trash hurriedly diumped on the countryside.

The underground highways are better. Whats worse is tyo know that the character and picturesque nature of many islands will be spoiled by being linked to the mainland- just to make more cash for somebody it seems.

there are still some charming islands off the west coast, accessible by a long ferry ride. Long may they stay that way.
