i'm looking for an avg here, i'm trying to decide between yale academy daegu and HESS in taiwan.

one of the key things i'm missing here is the outside class hours, i hear taiwan (and hess especially) requires that you do lots of prep+marking

what's the avg for you guys in korea? daegu anyone? or even better if iyou work for YALE?

thanks

When I worked in a hagwon, almost none.

Nowadays, at least (at the very minimum) one hour prep/related work to one hour of class time.

I teach 20 hours a week, and spend about 15 hours on prep.

For a kiddie hogwon? An hour a day max, and that's when you're first starting out. It gets easier the longer you teach at the same place. Maybe a few extra hours when report cards are due.

You may be expected to spend an extra hour or so on site for "prep time" in addition to your classes. Check your contract for that. Whether you use that time to prep or do other thinngs will mostly depend on you.

When I start a job usually I spend a couple of hours a day preparing for classes but then when I get into a routine then I spend less and less time preparing on a daily basis.

Usually I spend one day (mostly Monday) where I prepare for the week and then the rest of the week I don't have to do much because I'm ready.

An hour a day is enough I think for any hagwon. I have plently of books so I don't need to prepare much.

I must spend over 20 hours a week doing outside of class work, but what I do is not at all typical for a Korean hagwon. In my old jobs I did *beep* all prep.

for a hagwon job I would do about 5-10 minutes of prep. However since I started working at the university level including grading time I'm pretty close to a 1:1 ratio. Maybe a little more closer to the end of the term.

A suggestion: Take a text book and sit down and make a complete lesson plan so you see how long it takes you to make a lesson you feel is ready to teach. It won't tell you how much time other people need, but it will tell you about your own style.

I spend about an hour per lesson prepping but I do most of my lessons from scratch.

The piece of this particular puzzle that's missing for me is how many different periods a week you teach? In China it appears (for Conversation classes) you're typically teaching the same single lesson 8 times a week to double periods.

Is it the same in Korea? Of course, that only addresses prep time, not grading or one-on-one or anything like that--just trying to get a feel for the daily routine in Korean Universities.
