'My Name Is Kim Sam-soon' Tops Ratings
Quote: |
The MBC drama "My Name is Kim Sam-soon" is recording viewer ratings of 37.7 percent, the highest for a drama this year, AGB Nielsen Media Research said Thursday. The program recorded the same ratings in a survey by TNS Media Korea, topping the year's previous record of 36.2 percent set by KBS weekend drama "Letters to the Parents."
The secret to the success of "Kim Sam-soon" is the blunt dialogue and the popularity with women, who drive ratings, of a protagonist many of them can sympathize with.
Viewers were glued to their sets for Wednesday's episode watching Sam-soon's heartbreak over Hyun Jin-heon (played by actor Hyun Bin), whose love for Yoo Hee-jin (played by actress Chung Ryeo-won) rekindled when he discovered she had left his side to battle cancer.
The drama enjoyed ratings of over 20 percent from the start, giving MBC, which had been in the doldrums, a new lease of life while producing some new stars.
Hyun Bin, who had seen mixed reviews in the past, has grown extremely popular as he nails his role as Jin-heon, a man feeling the pain of a love unlike any other, while Korean-American actor-model Daniel Henney has made the leap to stardom with his sculpted good looks |

I think my wife is in love with that guy (far right in pic). |

How original! Truly groundbreaking writing there.

It gets better! Because she was a former cancer patient, the guy's mother forbade her from dating her son. |

one of the reasons why i can't stand k dramas is the parental involvement in children's love life. i'm baffled that korean viewers don't find that this premise is a turn-off that works against the male lead. i mean, just imagine, here is a twenty something year old guy who has to have his mom's permission to date anybody. and koreans find that sort of childish guy attractive?
ok so we have an illness, a forbidding parent, a rich guy, a poor girl, tension between the social classes... i don't see how this drama is different from the same old corny k dramas |

The cancer bit made me laugh, but the family involvement in each other's lives is like central to Korean society, that's just the way it is.
However, I would like to see 1 f**king drama where the female lead isn't:
1. Blind
2. Deaf
3. Poor
4. Has cancer
5. All of the above
and her job is always:
1. Fashion Designer
2. Graphic Designer
3. Writer
4. All of the above |
