Some of the best physical comedy they do is good. But like Benny Hill for the British or Jerry Lewis for the Americans the vast majority of it is peurile.
Sex is Zero has a few funny scenes. |

| If any of you wants to taste what Korean humour of the time is like, I highly recommend you to watch the "Gag Concert" on KBS2. |

| I'm still not sure that I understand the distinction between 'funny' and 'interesting'. |

| Korean men are largely effete & they have an effete sense of humour too. |

Come on.....someone must have a sense of humour.....they decided that the slogan for Korea would be "Dynamic Korea".
Sorry I know that I make a lot of posts about this, but it's so oxymoronic. |

i don't know if there's anybody on this board who speaks korean well enough to really say anything deep about korean comedy. music is universal but comedy is incredibly culture-specific. i mean, i don't mean to sound snooty or just dump on this thread. but that's what i think. there's also no accounting for personal taste. the other day somebody wrote that Will Ferrell isn't funny, which is just so so so wrong.
anyways, Sex is Zero is pretty funny if you liked American Pie
so is this:

Billy I don't understand it- the guy is tell Mi-Yeung he loves her, and asking her to marry him or something?
I always get a few laughs from Korean comedies, but have a definite sense that a lot of jokes are passing me by, either because of culture or some dodgy translations on the subtitles.
Anyway

yeah, the guy lays out those banners on the building saying 'please marry me' so the girl in the office across the street can see them. (i think they say ̿! Ѵ. ȥּ) the last three panels show the people in the building that he laid the banners across. read the backwards korean in the last panel.
anyways, this is the first korean cartoon where i really laughed out loud right away. with other ones i either didn't get it or got it but just thought it was dumb. |

Besides the basic stuff, Korean humor these days has a lot to do with word play. Like if I say a sentence and it can mean one thing, but taken another way, it means something else...
Anyway, understanding Korean, and a bit of their culture, I can appreciate that they have a different sense of humor, but I can't say whether it's better or worse than an american sense of humor. |

so, perhaps I just don't get much K-humour

Key point right there.
Humour differs from country to country. It is culturally influenced and even driven. What we find funny might not be to Koreans and vice versa. It does not mean that they or us do not have a sense of humour. |

Swiss James, the first time I read the comic strip I had absolutely no clue what was supposed to be funny (not a comprehension problem, as the majority of the text is onomatopaeic) ....
Now using a different computer, I realize that the last panel is concealed by your signature pic... no wait, the last THREE panels are concealed by your sig. Even opening the image in a new window gives me nothin'.
It's only scrolling through the "Topic review" on the comments page that I can actually see it. Just thought I'd let you know, since you'd be doing Korean humour a disservice to imply that the first five panels constitute their idea of a joke. |
