I found this interesting, especially in light of the recent debate in the US about forcing people off their land to make room for business developments.
Any watersports fans out there? Here's something to deepen your appreciation during the 2008 games.

Earlier this month, hundreds of farmers protested in a Beijing suburb after being forced off their land and not offered compensation or resettlement to make way for the Shunyi Olympic Aquatic Park, the venue for 2008's rowing and canoeing competitions. |
More to come too, so don't think that watersports will be the only ones with blood on their medals.

"Another 15.5 billion yuan will be used to dismantle 69 villages in the city proper," it said.
The report did not provide further details, nor did it say where people living in the dismantled villages would be moved, but many old "hutong" lanes and traditional courtyard homes are disappearing every year.

Warning: Everything below here is a rant.
I said it before and I'll say it again: Unconscionable.
By and large I think the Chinese government has been doing a spectacular job this last decade or so, but there are still a lot of folks getting trod upon over there.
Now they're trying to make this type of travesty easier in the US.
I remember from when I was in grade school one of our family's friends. She was a fine upstanding community member, a teacher, softball coach, and girl scout leader. Sadly though, she was merely lower middle class.
She was bullied and abused, and eventually her house was torched. One couldn't prove anything, but a certain local resterauntuer, a man who owned many businesses in the area, known for suffering fire losses and big insurance payoffs when his businesses weren't doing well, had been harassing her for some time to sell her family's house to him so he could expand a parking lot.
Eventually he aquired the land.
I didn't like it then when it was being done by a two bit small town thug, and I won't like it anymore now that it's legal.
I hope US American readers will oppose this legislation. Write your congressmen and senators. This was supposed to have been dealt with in the bill of rights. This was a part of why we kicked out the Colonial Government in the first place.
Oh, and could someone please enlighten me as to the name of the piece of legislation I'm fuming about? Thanks. |
