They're total wingnuts but at least they're 'mostly harmless' as far as religions/cults go.
Has anyone actually read all of Dianetics? I couldn't do it- stopped around page 30- it was just too mind-numbingly dull and ridiculous. |

I believe Larry Niven's take on Hubbard (i.e.- Scientology was started due to a drunken bet at a Sci-Fi writer's convention that Hubbard couldn't invent a religion). |

dude, anyone could invent a religion. you need to make it very elite and quirky and people will buy into it. |

I had no idea about that book 'Dianetic' being a real scientology book. Ive always actually wondered what scientology was. I got bought that book a few years ago for my birthday. My parents got it for me because Im into counselling and psychotherapy they thought it looked good. I just found it quite difficult to read although was interesting. Was a couple of year ago now. I'm actually tempted now to give it another look |

Then again, when you think about many of the central tenets of (mainstream) Christianity, they're pretty quirky too. |

I don't know about your social circles, but mine used to sit around the kitchen table with some cheap wine and other mind altering substances and fantasize about making up our own religion. Add a little conspiracy theory, a little ambiguity and some sacrifice on the part of others, stir well and voila, you have yourself a religion. |

Anyone who can get past one page of Scientology drivel deserves to become a member. |

It makes the most sense--a hack sci-fi writer suddenly comes up with a religion that is equal parts pseudo-science and hokum. It's no coincidence that this so-called religion goes to such lengths to pressure adherents to part with their money either through fees, donations or flogging various useless overpriced items sold exclusively through the church.
Wait a minute, this is sounding a lot like televangelism... |

A difference being that with televangelism, you are not required to send in money in order to watch the show.
With Scientology, as soon as you say you're interested in the religion, they introduce you to one of their "salesmen"(that's actually what they're called) who asks you if you're gonna be paying for the courses with cash or credit card. And each step up the ladder requires the purchase of more courses, books, etc. Plus, I think you have to pay for the e-meters as well.
I should say that this is based on my experience in Edmonton, circa 1991, when a friend and I went into a Dianetics office on a lark in order to write the personality test(which of course told us that we needed Dianetics). I'd be interested in hearing anyone's more recent encounters with the group. |

Clambake, a major anti-scientology group, has the complete text of BAREFACED MESSIAH on-line. It's a decidedly unsympathetic biography of L. Ron Hubbard. I've read it off-line, and it's pretty good.

They really gotta take the "scient" out of "scientology" and just call it "ology" or something. Or Bullshitology could work.
In reply to some of the comments, it's an odd religion, if you've ever read the book, you'll know what I mean. And it was mind-numbingly dull. |

I was just about to post that URL too! It's one of the best expose of Hubbard and the founding of Scientology. The author, unfortunately, was declared "fair game" (ie the scientologist version of jihad) and really got harrassed big time by the scientologists.
It's amazing someone like Cruise can buy into this nonsense. |
