now the 7 +16 for Magloire is looking pretty good.

Wonder if the would accept the deal now if we throw in an extra first rounder next year.

Didn't think it was humanly possible to botch up this bad. To think he is getting paid to do this.

Like the Graham pick, though.

Its official we have the ugliest draft of ALL time: bad picks to go along with faces beaten over by the ugly stick.

the cv pick perplexes me. i honestly can't see any reason babs would have picked him, unless that's who nawlins wanted and we'll be getting mags later on (when mopete is allowed to be traded).

some are speculating that he'll put on 15-20lbs and play as an athletic center, a la samuel dalembert. i dunno. i'm still perplexed.

i like the graham pick, though. sure green and granger were still on the board, but graham is a guy who'll step in and be able to play some hard-nosed ball at the 3 right away. he's pretty much the same type of player that granger is, except graham's got a full 4 years of training under his belt from okstate.

green must be a serious headcase for all those teams to pass on him.

as i'm writing this, the raps just picked roko ukic at #41. love it. i honestly think this kid will be a good pg after a couple of years overseas.

if cv does end up being traded for mags, then this may not have been too bad of a draft for us. mags-bosh-graham will be an awesome frontcourt in the east, plus we got our pg of the future in ukic.

and now the talent skinny white kid from Croatia Roko Ukic.

This was a very good value pick for them. They finally addressed their PG position, though Roko won't do much for a few years.

Took a step back, re-hased some of the choices and have come to a conclusion:

It's not Chris Paul; but I llike it the picks. Remember CV was considered the 2nd best player in his high school class, behind some guy named Lebron. Graham the least. He's actually the only player I have a slight problem with (never liked him as a player).

Ukic was brilliant (he'll be the best player outta our draft) and here's to hoping for Gilchrist, Banks or Morris with our 58th pick.

That would be 4 players who were at one time or another considered lottery picks.

while listening to espn radio at work, ric bucher reported that one of the main reasons for selecting charlie and joey was that they didn't have any problem with playing in toronto. he said gerald green's reps told toronto they wanted no part of the raptors.

what's the tax on their salary? i heard fred carter say something like 58%. anyways, so far toronto's pick of CV seems to be the surprise and most laughed at pick in the draft.

i like the joey graham pick though. i would have picked up granger though. he seems to be a solid player.

Was praying that Granger would fall to my Nuggets. Oh well, there's always the FA period.

The Raptors are logged up at the forward position. Are they going to try to start CV, Graham and CB4? Who's playing center?

They'd maybe have a center if they picked Cameron Frye ( Laughing ) over Curriculum Vitae, but I think Frye's too skinny. Much like Marcus Camby, he won't be able to play the 5 effectively in the NBA.

Here's hoping Charlie Villanueva proves the critics wrong, so much so that I start caring enough to spell his name right.

(and is there any chance we can change Toronto's team name and uniforms? the new unis from Vince's 2nd year were OK and all, but the name and colors still suck heaps of balls. why oh why couldn't we have been the Toronto Terriers. i'm serious.)

Half court sets Hoffa will man the middle.

CV has the potential to bulk up and play C at times, much Amare. Raps wil line up with 2 pf's. Could be a match up nightmare with most teams considering there is a serious lack of quality C's in the league.

No one questions CV's skills. He's got as much upside as anyone else taken ahead of him. He just needs to get his head straight.

That said, I think he is traded. My guess is that its already done and just have to wait until the end of July (Mo-P situation) for it to be announced.

CV was actually a consideration at #4 for the Hornets.

.

I really wonder if his parents were the reason that the guy slipped so far. Apparently his parents were demanding there be a clause in his contract allowing the kid to pursue his college degree. I can see more than one GM begging off the kid for that reason. Here they are going to spend millions of dollars on a player who opted out of college to grab the bucks, yet he wants to be treated like a college student. I think his handlers greatly overestimated his value in this league and took a huge misstep resulting in his falling. If he is going to try and study instead of concentrating on his career, you have to question his dedication to the sport and who is really running his life.

That being said... Toronto probably still should have drafted him or Granger. No matter how Raptors fans or their staff try to spin it, CV was a huge reach for the team value wise. They had a need at PG and they didn't address it until the 2nd round. They really lucked out that Roko was still around, otherwise it would have been much worse..... I also noticed that surprise, surprise the raps took a PF with their final pick in the draft... Confused

But, I am a Utah fan, meaning Toronto's problems don't affect me that much. I just want Deron Williams to pan out.

did you know that villanueva's nickname is "cv3"? so now we'll have cv3 and cb4 up front. weird.

i watched the press conference with babs and mitchell last night and i'm beginning to see their reasoning. our key needs going into the draft were rebounding, defense & a qb. we filled all of those needs.

cv3 may have been picked a bit too high but look at the picks from #7 down to #13. with the exception of the korolev kid, they're all bigmen. who's to say that cv3 would have still been there at #16? i guarantee he wouldn't.

he's big, athletic and versatile. he can play the 3, 4 or 5. cv3 will be a nice compliment to cb4. teams will have fits trying to guard 2 athletic bigmen on the floor.

i'm actually glad we took graham ahead of granger. granger's biggest knock is that he's not much of an athlete and doesn't possess that quick first step, while graham ranked first out of 75 prospects in the athletic testing. at the end of the day, they'll both pan out to be the same type of player, so i'd rather have the better athlete.

roko falling to us at #41 was a miracle. i've seen vids of this kid play and he looks like a manu ginobili with pg skills. i can't wait til this kid is able to play.

the slokar pick at #58 was because he was a bigman who can shoot the lights out from downtown. dirk? most say he'll end up playing at sf when he develops.

mitchell kept stressing how these kids were "bouncing off the walls to be a toronto raptor" during their interviews. i don't know what to make of that. did they get negative feedback from other kids?

oh yeah, before people start making fun of cv3's looks. he has a rare disease which causes him to lose all his hair.

I think most people are aware of his disease... still doesn't mean that we should pretend that he's a looker.

I do hope the Raps' picks pan out as well.. it's fair to say that they're my second favourite team after the Pistons...

Atleast someone had somethng good to say about the Rap's draft...

Quote:
Toronto Raptors
Picks: 1a) Charlie Villaneuva, 6-10, 240, PF, Connecticut; 1b) Joey Graham, 6-7, 225, SG, Oklahoma State; 2a) Roko Ukic 6-5, 185, PG, Split, Croatia; 2b) Uros Slokar, 6-10, 240, PF, Snaidero, Italy

Needs: They need everything to help young star power forward Chris Bosh.

Summary: Villaneuva has been an underachieving talent thus far, so maybe coach Sam Mitchell will challenge him to a fight and get it over with. Graham and Ukic are two great picks. Heck, the Raps may have done this right. Is it Wayne Embry?

Grade: A-
