Advertising Exec. for a daily newspaper.
I had started in the industry after university, at a smaller paper doing a combination of sales and writing but as time went on and I moved up to bigger jobs, it became more and more sales and less writing. Finally, I just said, "See ya, I'm going to Korea." They asked when (not in the least bit shocked) and I replied, "Thursday." |

As a wandering traveller, this is my 58th job in life so far. I've been a cattle musterer in the outback of australia,a game warden in Africa,A journalist in N.Ireland, as well as plenty of low life jobs I wouldn't wish on anybody.
Just before coming out i was a landscape architect making rich peoples' dream gardens a reality, in W. Sussex. |

Japan for 3 years teaching English.. Trainee Financial Journalist on Fleet Street - lasted 6 months (just couldn't get enough of that Global Custody!).. Qatar for 18months teaching English to Arabs in an oil company (Why are Camels called 'Ships of the Desert?'..... because they're full of Arab semen!)... and off to Seoul in the middle of August to teach for the BC. |

Team leader in a customer service call center. In other words I was a cog in a vast machine that is Corporate America. Lost my job due to financial cutbacks. It's a complicated situation. Did office temp work and lived on unemployment for close to a year, then one day a friend and I were discussing some common friends of ours who were teaching in Korea. She suggested I might give it a shot. That was mid-June of last year (almost exactly 1 year ago in fact). Less than two months after that fateful conversation here I was.
So as for future plans, I've decided to have a go at making ELT my full-time career. To that end I'm taking a CELTA course this summer, then coming back to Korea to get more experience, and then...and then...and then... |

Wow....so many other former newspaper lackeys out there
I worked at a paper in Washington DC as the editorial assistant for the Metro and Business desks. Got bored, frustrated and stressed, especially after September 11. I thought to myself many times, Man there must be more to life than rehashing this horror over and over, without really doing anything about it.
Going to Korea obviously had nothing to do with that, but I wanted to know if I would enjoy teaching, something that is more a more hands-on and direct way to changing people's lives than what my experiences in journalism proved to be. |

After completing my Master degree, I became a resident hospital chaplain at the Toronto Hospital- General Div. (a.k.a. Doctor death).
Around that time, I also worked with mentally challenged group homes. Then did another resident counseling course- worked as a p.t. counselor and then eventually crossed the puddle.
