Which do you use, Predominant or Predominate?

I use both interchangeably without any second thoughts

Like the beaver said, one is an adjective, the other a verb.

Maybe because they sound alike, there is confusion?

No confusion for one who knows the correct word though. In speaking, it is hard to notice. In writing it might matter.

Also, who ever uses these words anyway?

Now if it were "dominant" and "dominate" it would be simpler.
