Thanks for this link, and I will put it to good use for studying the Korean language before I come here.

I have a Japanese friend in the UK, so would it be worth my while asking her to teach me some basic Japanese and would this get me very far in Korea?

It may well get you a long way into hot water depending on when and where you use it and who you're speaking to . Mind you, I've used it on several occasions - usually to scare the heck out of Japanese tourists... Twisted Evil

Some people don't like if you use a Japanese word. I had a co-worker (male) get upset when I said 됀 was like miso. On the other hand plenty of Koreans have studied Japanese and in my experience are happy to meet someone else who has too. (Come to think of it, though, all such Koreans I know are women.)

How about if I asked my friend to help me learn to read and write Japanese? Would that help me with Korean at all (ie I can read Italian, Spanish, German et al even though I don't understand it!)

While the grammar structures are similar and the vocabulary of both derive a huge amount of words from Chinese, the writing systems are totally different. Kind of like Polish and Russian, both Slavic languages but one uses the Roman alphabet and the other uses Cyrillic.

If you want to learn Korean, just go directly to Korean and skip Japanese. That's my advice anyway.

Recently at a juk stall in Pusan's Gukje Market the ajumah spoke to me in Japanese, right off the bat. Now I am a Caucasian; don't know why she figured Japanese would work better than Korean - actually I am about equally good/bad in either language so didn't make any difference...

I studied Japanese many years ago and have forgotten a lot - it does help to some degree in understanding Korean grammar, and a few words are similar, but you might as well put your energy into studying the Korean alphabet and grammar before you come.

And the Korean alphabet is totally different from the Japanese four. And you'll learn it a lot faster. The 28 or so characters plus a few combination forms you can learn in days, the 2000+ Japanese kanji, plus the two kana syllablaries will take you years. You'd likely be outa here before you learned them all.
