You ever wonder if someone sits at home and makes up one of these absolutely insane contracts and then posts it as a troll?
I mean this contract is just too bad for words! |

You have to 'successfully' complete the training period during which you are paid 4.000 per hour - what's to prevent them from keeping you in training for as long as you are dumb (oops, I mean trusting) enough to go along?
This is an absolutely ridiculous contract - are you sure it's for real and not a wind up? |

| Come on people, you can't recognize a troll when you see one? To the OP: You had me going until about 1/3 of the way into the contract. Well done sir. Now please spare bandwidth for the REAL newbies. |

Well geez, thanks for the great help TheUrbanMyth, schwa and Grotto (and sincere thanks to the others who actually offered proper advice on this thread). Not everyone's out to get you Grotto, be it the "church people" or people who are asking advice on a messageboard.
I'll ditch this contract and keep on looking, and I'll be making mental notes to take what the three stooges mentioned above have to say with a pinch of salt.

| This contract looks like the one's that pop up in some christian hogwans around Korea. I had a friend in Masan that walked into this 5 years ago and didn't think much of the terms, until 6 months in and having a chance to talk to other teachers who worked elsewhere. They're out there. Not as much as before, obviously. There's one outside of Gyeongju, whose contract was emailed to me 2 years and I almost puked my ramen all over my monitor. Rule of thumb: Avoid christian hogwans like the plague, unless you have someone on the inside who you can trust and verify that it checks out. |

I agree that this is one of the worst contracts I've ever seen. As for everyone wanting to get you........... many Koreans (esp. hagwan owners)
have a very different view of what constitutes fairness in their treatment of employees. Eventhough they may be "well-intentioned" in their own minds, what they are offering will without doubt lead to a lot of pain and frustration on the part of anyone who works for them.
I suppose from a Korean's perspective, this might seem a reasonable contract. It seems to be the case that employers expect teachers to be little more than slave labour. A lot of Korean workers I have talked to have to endure far worse condidtions than those mentioned in that contract. Things like forced overtime without pay etc.
I'm not by any means saying that we should accept these kinds of conditions, I'm just trying to give a little perspective.
If we want things to change in Korea (for the better) then we must agree never to sign crap contracts like that.
But I suppose there's some newbie just getting of a plane somewhere in K-land that would jump at the chance to sign that piece of trash.
Take the advice that others have given above. Move on. You can find much better.
Good luck |

It was funny the first time, afterwards it gets a bit stale. Is it getting cramped under that bridge yet?
Guess I'm stuck being Larry? |

I know two people who work in a Christian hogwan--teaching evolution is banned, etc. But it's also the best in town, the kids learn at a phenomenal rate. They basically teach history, science, and math using American textbooks. Unfortunately the science textbook is from BJU. |

Yes, I have to agree - after reading the first few paragraphs, I honestly believe(d) that this is a joke.
IF Always Curious is not a sock or troll...then honestly, this contract is not even worth a polite reply back. The only reply that they need is a good laugh in their face....
However, I also do have to say that with the nature of some of Always Curious' other posts....I do wonder if s/he is a real poster..... |

It should be quite easy to tell.
As for Mr/Miss Always Curious, I am curious as to why you did not post the name and location of this school? Then people whose contracts are up soon and doubt your story can go check it themselves. I might even do so myself. And if your story is real, other teachers need to be warned against this school.
Put up or shut up time! |

Can't you read? I just counted and if you read 31 words into the post then you'll see I mentioned the name of the school.
I could make some smartass comments about you "sparing bandwidth" for people who are going to read posts properly but I think I'll avoid stooping that low.
Are you another person who thinks everyone's out to get them too? I suppose you've shown how helpful you're going to be for people on here. At least Grotto had the courtesy and grace to start a nice lovely thread about me |
