I had one week of pre test time and I had one class. I'm off of school for 5 days. I watched DVD's in the English Zone. I did some CEU homework for my professional life.

To solve the dilemna of butt sitting one should bring a movie to school and watch it on the big screen TV in your classroom. X-box and PS2 are also other possibilities. You can sit in your classroom and play games to your hearts content and get paid for it as images of hogwan slaves, who have to work every minute they are at the hogwan, dance through your head.

Funny, that's exactly what I do. I play a lot of Xbox these days during school hours. It's a good time.

I spent this week writing detailed lesson plans (retroactively mind you) for all of May and June, 1st grade to 5th. 40 days worth of info, multiplied by five classes=200 entries that look something like this

June 1 2005
3rd grade
Chaper 9: Public Parks

I. What are public parks?
a. Discuss nature
b. Discuss people
c. Discuss the intersection of nature and people

II. Public parks- taking care
a. What is litter?
b. How do we contribute to litter?
c. Is this going to wind up as litter? (Not really but was sorely tempted.)

My coteacher, who has deluded herself into thinking that she is my boss, wanted me to do all five grades as she is "busy." I gave her 5th grade (4 to 1 is a good division of labor, no?) and the next day she looked at me helplessly and said, in a voice that could grate parmesan, "I couldn't do it, soooooorrrry." Oh and I had to sign the space next to each entry, meaning signing my name 200 times in one day. (5 classes, 20 days a month, 2 months of plans.)

i don't mind the mandatory 9 to 5 hours at my school (my principal is real old school about such things). that's when i get the most work done; emailing friends, checking this forum, reading bbc online, horoscopes, etc... Cool

the trick i've found is to always have a window open on the computer with some lesson plan on it, so when the boss walks by, quickly pull that up. Twisted Evil

Today was test day. So no English classes.
Did anyone tell me? Naaahhh why bother.

So I brought the movie Sahara and watched it on the big screen TV and played the new Medal of Honor game.

Still kind of boring though.

I've been in Korea 2 years and this is one thing I just can't get.. Why do Koreans have this bizzare idea that to be productive one must be at work.

We have tests and no classes for two days and I have to sit here doing nother for 1 and half of them. Korean teachers are in the same boat too.

I know I should be working on but my crappy computer can't run powerpoint for more than 30 minutes without crashing. Google image search crashes my computer. And ms word I have to lift my hands of the key board every sentence so that the words will come up. So I can't exactly produce much in the way of teaching materials

Grrr

At my high school in Chile we had to have "meetings" for approx. four hours every Wednesday afternoon.

We were instructed to get together, talk about issues like "what should a school aim for in the 21st century?", "decide" on the issue, write a memo (that no one would ever read), and go home.

Every Wed. for the whole year. Some Weds. they would send the students home so we could have the whole day as a "retreat" to deal with these pressing issues.

Then we'd "celebrate" with a nice Mass. Pick the picture of Jesus that means the most to you, and tell everyone else why you picked it, etc.

Made especially interesting when you got to know everyone and could see how they were perpetually intriguing against each other for position.

Perhaps you should bring a book to work and count your blessings? Smile

I just found out, minus my 7 days off I'm expected to come in on the hols and teach conversation to any students that can be arsed to turn up. I think apart from the teachers who are being made to "watch the school" I'm the only one whos going to be here. Now, I think I can schedule these conversation classes myself so i figure, 10-12pm everyday then try and blag it so i can go home (i only seem to do a 15hour week with 1hr = 45min)

BUT i dunno, they really hate it if u go home early. I think EPIK and GEPIK changing that one rule would convert a good 80% of complainers in to lovers Very Happy

Blunder I suggest you find the "sign out" book and sign yourself out to do errands or whatever. That's what I have been doing all exam week. I have no classes and sign myself out at 12.00 and return the next day.

Admittedly I am the first foreign teacher at my school, so they don't have any procedure but I am paving the way for the next teacher. Wink

I think I can second that. Most of the regular complaints that I hear are about this sit on your arse attitude they have.

This week has been pretty boring. Students are taking exams and finish up at noon. Granted it'd be better not to have to work this week at all, but it's ok.

Come noon I eat lunch and then sneak away and play Xbox games with the students that live in the dormitory for the rest of the day. It's awesome that no one even questions where I am.

I'm not looking forward to the 2nd week of August though. Me, the vice principal, and a few of the office staff will be the only ones here Shocked They're not bad people, I just fear the complete and total boredom.

I have new forms to fill out. They are in Korean so it should be a snap, right? Love the challenge. Wink

I was given the rest off the week out. Bought a DVD writer, went to Busan. Tomorrow, going to hang out. Maybe go to Seoul. This exam thing is great. Laughing

I have decided to hijack this discussion and use it as my official gripe thread. Now then...

Two days ago Michelle interrupted my class to yell at me in broken English for ten minutes about what a bad teacher I am. She treats me like I was Bangladeshi or something.

Today, she came to work 75 minutes late. Not to worry- she balanced things out by leaving 75 minutes early. And she signed in for overtime.
