One of the intersting elements in all this is that so few hagwons actually want teacher. They want native speakers or people that will do whatever the parents want, but not really teachers. What are they going to do when all they can get is a (pseudo-)qualified person who actually wants to teach?

hmmm...

That's true but a bright eyed fresh college grad fits that profile nicely.
They really need to demand more professionalism and include criminal record checks though.
IMHO Japan's system works pretty well.

The first time, shortly after the whole SBS nonsense, I was goofing off in class a bit teasing my students, and one of my middle-school girls said to me "Are you one of those fake teachers?" I tried to push her a bit on it, but she giggled and said "nothing..", so I let it go.

Today I was having a conversation with a very high-level student and he brought up the subject of foreign teachers: "Many foreign teachers who come here, have low marks in University [and drop out.], so they just buy copies of their degrees." In my own words, he went on to say that these foreign teachers would be nobodies in their home countries, but here they are in a land of opportunity.

Nothing terribly original here, of course, but still, it was disheartening to hear this from my student. It's a terrible perception for students to have this of their teachers, and it is has potential of being a self-fulfilling prophecy.

You can use my situation to inform your high-level student that I have been treated horribly by Korean people(Wonjang) even though I'm a good legal teacher from an accredited college with a 3.0 + G.P.A.

Tell the high-level student about the crap Wonjangs that we work for which in my opinion puts the "land of opportunity" far away from South Korea. Ask the student to put together a Korean reform group to oust the unconstituational "work release form" which sometimes puts the foreign teacher in the middle of a dispute between the new and old Wonjang simply because of the Wonjang greed.

The new Wonjang don't want to pay for the plane ticket back home because it will expire after 1(and certainly is too cheap to pay for any extra costs that may come to extend that ticket a few months dispite the fact that the foreign teacher would be able to teach legally if that happened) year and since the old Wonjang probably illegally ended the contract after you taught for a few months and before they sent you to get an E-2 Visa the foreign teacher probably taught illegally for a few weeks at the least; and then found themselves teaching illegally until crap can somehow, who knows how get straightened out.

"land of opportunity" my ARS! I've been here for two years and I'm nearly broke! I could have quit and gone home like many people on this board have advised but I don't have any mommy and daddy to cry. And, if I did no good will come of it. My case could help the Korea esl situation, so all the bmb haters shut up!

The problem is not just the hakwon system. It is also on the supply side (teachers). Reforms need to affect both sides of the equation.

Bad teachers and bad people are always going to come as long as someone is willing to hire them, and that doesn't matter if they're educated or not. You simply cannot ask people to screen themselves out, and immigration does not have the resources to screen every teacher coming here, and nor should they.

Yeah, I've heard the same drivel about phony teachers. Uni students are the worst. If you talk to many BA students, many have told me foreigners shouldn't even be here. Is this is the "new" generation of thinkers(future social planners). Have the Northerners "infiltrated" media and unis in the south to promote dissention amongst the educated classes and the general rank n file under the illusion of nationistic pride.
