When I first had the slightest thought about coming to Korea in November, I would have only been making $2,065.69 CAN. But as of today's exchange rate, 1.9 million WON turns into $2,365.45. That's 300 bucks more!
Seems the Won is doing very well. |

The exchange rate will continue to improve especially versus the U.S. dollar, don't know that much about Canadian currency. The long term trend is a weak U.S. dollar. Congats to all ESL teachers in Korea! |

As somebody who isn't the most orgainized as a person, I really don't know how you keep these facts so readily at hand. |

So doesn't this mean that we're gradually making less money? |

I'm sure someone else has the exact rates, but as Hanson pointed out, a few years were missed. Heh - the won is the strongest it has been against the dollar since the crisis in 1997, when the won bottomed out at over 2000 per $1. As has been discussed in other threads, the won is at a 7.5 year high against the dollar.
If you've been here since before the crisis, things aren't as good as they once were. If not, things are better than ever before. |

When I got here...the won was trading at around 630 to the Canadian...!
Then the 1997 crisis hit.
Now its doing fine.
Currencies will fluctuate folks... |

For all you fine English chaps, a baek man Won got me the tidy sum of over 530 quid sterling t'other day. 'Twas most splendid indeed, so I celebrated with a game of lawn croquet, a pot of tea and some cucumber sandwiches for me and my partner Cedric Blessington-Smythe.
Splendid, I say! |

The real reality however is that when I was here in 1996.. I was making 1.4 million won/month. That was standard at the time. |

This royally sucks. Luckily I wired money home when it was 1015 -- it jumped to 1031 the next day. Hopefully it won't go much higher than it already has. |

One month ago...the Korean won was 797 to 1 Cdn dollar.
This was great...best it has been in a few years
Was about 720 when I came in 1999.
But since then...well...not so good... 800's and up...even went to 900's last summer.
My universtity upgraded my contract this year...so, here comes my Korean Pension.
About 12million won...cool... but one month later...
Today, at the bank it was 835 to one dollar...
The won is not doing so well this past month...
The reason I am mentioning this...
I am in the process of exchanging w8,350,000 for $10,000cdn...approx.
So, I am losing about 350,000won...bummer for me.
Anyway, I get the feeling it's has something to do with the Korean government not wanting people going abroad during the vacation season.
Happened last year too. |
