Hey, I have a businessman who is hard-core about wanting to learn English to do business abroad. He's paying my school big wucks for an hour of conversation with me every day, and today he even asked me to give him homework. What kind of homework would you assign to a businessman (upper intermediate level) who is voluntarily asking for it? I don't want to just give korean-style busywork. In the class meetings we're doing guided free talking with LISKorea books. |

If he's there for conversation, I'd give him writing homework. Give him something to write about. |

I'd give students who are motivated real life situations with character sketches and have them write dialogues. It helps them focus on how they could express themselves if they found themselves in the same situation. |

Formal letters/emails - letter of application, complaint, negotiation...
Writing proposals or reports (NOT those stupid 'report journals' the KETs write after their free study trip abroad)
Find him articles from business sections in the paper or Time mag or something (or even better get HIM to find articles that interest him) - his homework is to read the article and then summarize it for you, either/both in writing and as your conversation warmer the next day. |
