Hmmmm ... while audio we DO have, the video for some reason is a no-go.
Anyways, what do you think the effect of this global effort might be ??? Will it acheive its stated aim of reducing / eliminating global poverty ??? |

Sure, a little. Everyone will feel charitable, etc., and a few of our world leaders will feel pumped for their g8 meeting . . . but to quote Jimmy from South Park, "I mean, come on."
If Chris Martin would buy one less car, or if ___ (insert glutonous celebrity) would throw themselves one less birthday party, we'd be a lot closer to real progress. If 9/11 didn't encourage personal responsibility and global consciousness (for Americans at least), this sure as hell won't. This is for publicity, pure and simple. Entertainers are a demographic with the money and influence to actually make real change in the world, but since that would involve compromise and a reduction of their egotism, obviously nothing's gonna happen.
And it isn't being charitable if you make somebody else buy something. |

For all of "Africa's" problems (if it really is a unified geographic area, and not an artificial construct), don't forget that there are many, many corrupt local actors involved in the region's poverty.
How is Live 8 going to change all of that? Then again, I always enjoy live music. |
Agreed on that one. About the only ones the West is encourage pharmaceutical companies to somehow give out medicine to these places at local prices.. or just out right buy the pharmeceuticals from them at their prices (and make them even more wealthier beyond their wildest dreams).
Short of the whole 'disease and AIDS' thing.. most of Africa's problems are becasue of local actors and way too many 'new wars'.. I don't see any change in that unless the nations of the world send a Peacekeeping Force so large that they become the dominating powers in half of those war-torn areas.
Either way.. what exactly are they raising the money for anyways? Half of it just goes to the promoters and event planners.. the stadiums and places they play, etc.. etc.. it would be fascinating to see a breakdown of where all the revenues go exactly. |

Raucous Live 8 crowd cheers Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, boos Celine Dion
ANGELA PACIENZA AND TARA BRAUTIGAM
Sat Jul 2, 9:22 PM ET
BARRIE, Ont. (CP) - Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Cockburn and the Barenaked Ladies were among the homegrown musical stars who crowded onstage Saturday night to belt out Rockin' in the Free World, bringing down the curtain on a raucous Live 8 concert bash. It was the first time Young had performed since suffering a brain aneurysm earlier this year and 35,000 concert-goers roared their approval.
Immediately after the song, musicians broke into a chorus of O Canada.
It was a fitting end to a day of shows held simultaneously to pressure leaders of the wealthy G8 nations to increase aid to Africa when they meet in Scotland this week.
"Today we are part of the biggest rock concert in history," said Bryan Adams, one of the day's first performers at Park Place, about an hour's drive north of Toronto.
"We're seeing people power. I believe in that."
Hosted by comedians Dan Aykroyd and Tom Green, the Barrie gig had been criticized for a talent lineup that some deemed "over the hill."
But the mostly 20-something crowd seemed happy to spend much of the nine-hour event clapping along to hits by rock veterans like Young, Adams, Cockburn and Tom Cochrane.
Montreal's Simple Plan injected one notable dose of youthful energy into the event, sprinting around the stage and squirting water at the crowd.
Lead singer Pierre Bouvier reminded Live 8 revellers they had gathered for a reason.
"Please remember this day is more than just a concert," he said. "Don't forget about it tomorrow. Help out people who are in need."
The only sour note of the day occurred when the crowd booed a satellite performance from Las Vegas by Quebec singer Celine Dion.
"No, no, no," scolded Aykroyd as the catcalls rained down. "Be proud of Celine Dion. She's here to help and entertain us. She's working hard, hard, hard."

Way I heard it, they are not raising money at all, not even passing a hat among the throngs gathered. It's about publicizing a problem and timing it at the start of the latest G8 meeting to shame the delegates attending into doing the right thing,
There has been some criticism of the event over the fact that fundraising is being ignored, but I can understand what that's about. How do you get the money from all those hats to the people who need it? The landscape has become so politicized that there aren't any NGOs any more that have not been branded by someone as The Enemy.
That is part of the shame of this - there is no choice put to play music to change the minds of large numbers of people, instead of just asking for a handout. |
