So my contract says I get two weeks vacation. I've read from others here, and it makes sense, that I can't just take a straight two weeks, or possibly even one whole week, as it would look bad for the school. To make things more difficult, the hagwon only has three teachers, and I teach 50% of the classes. So if I leave, the other two will have back-to-back classes the entire day. Oh, did I mention they are Korean, so they are taken advantage of and hence do not get any vacation? So there's a guilt complex I'm faced with from the non-reciprocation.

How do people fenagle these things? Any advice welcome.

Cheers,
Qinella

I swear they try to wear you down. I mean, it's nice to be needed, but held captive because you're popular?

I've got this middle manager who communicates to the big boss. But really all he does is come back with a dance around to drive one around the bend.

It's like a situation comedy.

It isn't so much how it 'looks' as 'who the heck is going to teach the classes?' if there are only 3 of you and you're the only foreigner--the big drawing card in the deck.

You might try looking on the calendar and locating Chusok. Then figure out a way to tack your vacation onto Chusok and going in to the boss now, weeks and weeks early, and see if he/she will go for it. Show the boss you are trying to take the needs of the school into consideration while still getting the contracted vacation.

I had 5 days that everyone in my hagwon got off, which was nice. For the other ones, I said, do you want me take it these days or these days? I tried to give them a choice between the two weeks and not a choice between giving me vacation or not giving me vacation.

You are entitled to take your vacation. It's nice that you are so concerned about your boss, but please look after yourself first. You need a break to re charge your batteries etc. Give the school a few options as to when you would like to have your vacation. Don't be suckered into them saying it's too busy for them to let you you go. It's not your problem.

Good luck and enjoy your summer holidays.

You would think that hogwans would schedule a week off twice a year to fulfill the contracted vacation needs. I suppose thats just too much to ask.
It would mean actually running your business instead of sitting back waiting for the money to come in.

I've heard some people just save it all until the end of the year and leave the hagwon two weeks early. Is that pretty normal? I know it would be nice to have that two week vacation right on top of the ending bonus.

I worked at a hagwon and managed to get like 4 of my contract holidays, and that was at a school with 3 foreign teachers. My boss said it was 'impossible' to get our contract holidays, it was quite the drama. But hell would freeze over before she would give us our holidays. She promised to pay us for them after our contract finished, and by her calculations and fiddling with the monthly salary we all got ripped off with about 66,000 won per day for missed vacation days. I wish I had the vacation Evil or Very Mad

They might decide they would rather fire you two weeks before the end of your contract and save themselves the bonus and airfare.

Seriously though, my employer gives me lengthy and fair vacations, and they get much hard work and respect from me in return. You deserve your vacation, and tell them when you want it, or demand that they tell you exactly when they are scheduling your weeks off.
