Immigration officials indicted over bribery

July 08, 2005 Two immigration officials at Incheon International Airport were indicted yesterday on bribery charges. Incheon District Prosecutors Office said the two officials had allowed ethnic Koreans from China to enter South Korea with forged passports, and Koreans banned from Japan to leave for that country on 14 occasions.
One officer received 15.6 million won ($14,821) and the other 47.3 million won from a broker identified only by his family name, Jeong.
The prosecutors also indicted seven Koreans who forged passports and identification cards for ethnic Koreans in China who wanted to emigrate to the United States illegally. The seven were arrested on information from four ethnic Chinese Koreans, who were apprehended trying to leave in May for the United States using counterfeit passports.

Hmm-I wonder what the reason was for getting banned from Japan. How do you bribe an official?! Walk up to the counter with cash in hand?

this case is just the tip of the iceberg...tons of 3D workers have been buying their way into korea for a long time.

the EPS (employee permit system whereby migrant workers are imported into korea for 3D jobs) which was brought in less than a year ago to redress the big big problems with the old system (corruption, human rights abuses, too many "runners") has resulted in a severe worsening of the problem. the system is now more corrupt than ever. there are also more undocumented workers than ever.

there is not supposed to be a fee for workers from develping countries to secure work in korea but from what i hear, a work visa under the new EPS costs a vietnamese about $15,000 USD, a bangladeshi $8000 USD and a philippino or an indonesian about $9000 USD. of course, to get this money they have to sell the farm, borrow from everyone they know, and sell their sister's dowry.

this is nothing new but the price has actually gone up since it became "free". this is all because the korean government is relying on "recruiters" (pimps specialising in human traffiking) from the worker's home countries to secure workers for the factories. there is lots of money being made on both that side and the korean side.

i expect the system to be scrapped by the end of the summer.

HAHAHHAAHAHHA!

I'm laughing, because I looked them straight in the face and accused them of bribery when I was at the Incheon airport. They bribed my school 2 years ago. "Give us 4 million won today, and we'll go away."

It's great to see someone get caught!

And oh boy, the crap had better hit the fan when someone from Alqueda bombs the subway and they figure out the guy bribed his way into the country illegally!

Yeah, caught. They'll apologise on TV and go about their business, same as ever.

Still in awe some alqueda operative whose best mosque buddy got roughed-up doesn't take a piece out of one of these guys or their whole office. Worse yet, kidnap one of their kids. They were jerks before, but it sounds worse now. Maybe they are getting their come-uppance with these bribe allegations??
