This is a bit interesting - there's a new page on Wikipedia with all the numbers grouped by language family. There are quite a few in some and very few in others; it's interesting to see which parts of the world have representation there and which don't, for whatever reason.
Germanic languages (1,112,516)
Romance languages (333,072)
Slavic languages (197,450)
Japonic languages (126,793) - just Japanese
Finno-Ugric languages (49,130) - Finnish, Estonian, etc.
Sino-Tibetan languages (33,559) - including Chinese
Constructed languages (32,639)
Semitic languages (25,035)
Austronesian languages (19,711) - Indonesian, etc.
Korean (10,462)
Turkic languages (7,621) - Turkey to Kazakhstan and western China
Baltic languages (6,646) - Latvia + Lithuania
Celtic languages (6,185) - Welsh, Gaelic, etc.
Iranian languages (6,167)
Indo-Aryan languages (4,645) - languages of India
Hellenic languages (4,480) - just Greek
Basque (3,004)
Tai-Kadai languages (2,598)
Caucasian languages (2,190) - Georgian, etc.
Dravidian languages (2,141) - Kannada, etc.
Mon-Khmer languages (1,757) - Vietnamese + Khmer
all the other language families have less then 1,000 so far.
Not the most controversial thread so I'm sure it'll just drop, but hey. |
