Wasn't there some kind of Porn Olympics? I know what some of you are thinking, and yes it's true that I'm a regular Don Quixote when it comes to such matters, but I'm sure I didn't just imagine it...shamelessly, 20 times a day...

I say drop all that running rubbish and have drinking games. And Kartrider. Those are the skills that you need in today's world; who in their right mind goes further than 100m without their Equus anyway?

Rugby 7s would be great in the Olympics. They are already in the Commonwealth Games and proving a success (i.e. New Zealand won).

Definantly Rugby...

It is becoming a truly international game and should be given a shot...

Besides, new Zealand has to win a gold medal in something

I seem to remember the 1984 Olympics when New Zealand won twice as many gold medals as Australia - all sitting down. We didn't even have to stand up to beat the Aussies. Sorry that I had to mention it... Australians don't even like to think about it now Embarassed .

Have you guys actually played rugby? It's a damn violent sport, and the body needs about a week to recover after a game; and even then you often have to carry niggling injuries into the next match.
There's no way on earth an international rugby tournament with pool matches and finals could be properly completed in two and a bit weeks. The injury toll would be massive, and come gold medal round, you'd be watching a bunch of third and fourth string players running around.
Or are you guys talking about rugby sevens?...a game which is considered more of a merry diversion than an actual "sport" by the rugby community (except maybe in Fiji and Hong Kong ).

I most certainly have... and had a broken jaw and broken ribs to prove it. Great game Very Happy. Unfortunately, I feel that I should point out that rugby used to be in the Olympics, but died out after the 1924 Olympics. The U.S.A. won the gold medal (defeating the two opposition teams - France and Romania) then, but were unopposed by any team of quality.

I say bring back rugby!!! A real sport in the Olympics... get rid of those shameful parodies such as synchronised swimming and re-introduce rugby.

Here's my proposition:

No sport should be allowed in the Olympics unless olympic gold will be treated as the pinnacle of that sport.
In tennis, winning Wimbledon is the ultimate achievement. I'm sure those players would gladly trade a gold medal for a Wimbledon title. In basketball, it's an NBA championship. In baseball, it's a world series (isn't it?). In soccer, it's a world cup (or even a league title). And in rugby, it's also a world cup.
Having these sports in the Olympics is, I think, demeaning to the status of other sports where they only get one shot in every four years at the ultimate prize.

Here's a few thoughts:

Wouldn't it be cool if pro boxers were allowed to compete in the Olympics? In pro boxing, there's so much wheeling and dealing, and risk versus reward management going on, that the elite contenders don't fight each other anywhere near as much as the fans would like to see. If they were allowed to represent in the Olympics, they would HAVE to fight each other.
It'll never happen of course.

If rugby 7's gets a go, then how about 20/20 cricket?

Is rugby truly a "global" sport? Yes, it's played in many countries, but the overwhelming majority of them are nowhere near international standard. How would it look in the Olympics when 80-90% (?) of the games finish with scorelines in the vicinity of 110-4. Newcomers would think it's a joke.

With those three round fights and bush scoring system?

That's not enough to base a judgement on.

Then again, you might see these guys blitzing for nine minutes of serious action. And what if they could wear headgear again? You'd have some guys leaning through serious shots to get in a ton of their own.

The World Baseball Classic is going to be held this coming March!

It will be the first time in history that the best baseball players in the world represent their country.

Can't wait. I've always wanted to see a legitimate international baseball tournament.

Looking forward to that South Korea v.s US final. Wink

Yes, no excuses. Really. But after the public humiliation dished out by NZ in 1984, Australia set up the Australian Institute of Sport, and started to churn out world-beating athletes (but almost exclusively in two sports - swimming and cycling). Of the 17 gold medals won at Athens by Australia, only 3 (diving, hockey and rowing) were not in either of those two fields. http://smh.com.au/olympics/medaltally/aus.html

On the other hand, New Zealand rested on its laurels and didn't set up an Institute of Sport and instead did as we have always done - relied on individual brilliance and dedication to come through. Unfortunately, in this day and age, it's not enough (but still enough to come 6th in the world -adjusted for population - in the gold medal tally).

Australia - 1 gold medal for every 1,186,000 members of the Australian population. Third in the world behind the Bahamas and Norway.
New Zealand - 1 gold medal for every 1,301,000 members of the New Zealand population. Sixth in the world behind (the first three and) Hungary and Cuba.

Not too bad for having virtually no government backing.

(Edit - something wrong with one of the links. Now fixed.)

Absolutely. And we (the KTA/Kukkiwon) are debating the changing of the rules of olympic style sparring (to include electronic chest gear, head punches, and more mandatory contact).

Ryst

BTW - Karate should not be included...Japan already has Judo....if any art, a Chinese-based style should be admitted in.
