Thought I'd start a Daegu thread for expats presently residing here or interested in more information on the area.
Post about local attractions, expat life, festivities, or any questions you might have.
Hi to all!
Any good English services here? Where are all the E-Mart's, Carrefour's and Home Plus?
Anyone hangout together? |

The only E-marts I know are in Dong-bu and Seosung gu, carrefour is near the Haen subway station and there's a Homeplus in chilsong-dong not too far from KNU/Bukyoung-dong.
There's a fashion week in the spring (Daegu is the fashion/textile and apple capital of Korea according to the city's signage). There's a trad. herb/medicine exhibition on/around the 'pharmacy' streets over behind the downtown Dong A department store.
I'm guessing that the tourist info would know more about what's going on. They have a big center with a computerized system (although when I tried it several years back it just repeated over and over "Welcome to Daegu").
The only English bookstore I know of is across the road from Il-shin hogwan. The name escapes me atm, but it has a big yellow sign with red letters and is on the second floor of a building with wedding dresses and a matrimonial investigation office on the first floor. Unfortunately the selection of non-teaching material is not broad.
Maybe http://tour.daegu.go.kr would have the type of info you're looking for. |

Know how to describe the exact bus stop for those locations or directions by taxi?
There's also Youngpoon Bookstore at Banwoldong Station with text books and a few literary titles in English.
Where do all the foreigners hang out?
Anyone know of a good gym downtown? |

Is there a Costco in Daegu yet? (that made my second year in Seoul so wonderful)
What's the sports scene like? Any hockey, rugby, baseball for foreigners?
I understand there's quite a bit of army folk around... any decent, western-friendly places (watering holes) that aren't overrun by 19 year old GI's? (older, more mature GI's are acceptable) |

Sangin actually isn't that bad a place. It's like a nice little centre outside of downtown. There's a big department store and some nice little shops and restaurants, I guess. I live one stop away from Sangin on the subway but never go there because it's just as easy to go downtown. There is a station in Sangin and it's about a 20 minute ride to the centre of Daegu. I think 18 minutes or something. |
