Walking around Seoul and seeing the cops, I thought they looked like a bunch of old barney fifes. In america you have the occasional donut muncher, but a lot of the cops are big and diesel and scary looking. Well, check out these videos of Korean police responding to riots. now that's scary!

warning: incredibly violent. i mean seriously.

Man that was shocking stuff. I dislike cops in general but ....I'm lost for words. The fucked up thing is that many of these riot cops are conscripts. It baffles the mind that they can do that sort of stuff.

That's the most disgusting thing I've seen in a long time. Koreans wonder why lots of foreigners here say that Korea isn't quite a democracy yet and is still basically a communist state... Gee, I wonder how we could feel that way when it seems like their government and their police officers maim and kill their own population, but only those who don't follow the government line. It's no wonder people have commented on the herd or sheep mentality here... what else can you do when you're going to be beaten if you don't go along. What a fucked up place sometimes...

when you check out what the protesters do, it seems more than fair to me... this was a video that only showed the riot police acting out. general rule of thumb, more riot police are injured per riot

I'll tell you what....if I was a cop...and on the riot squad...doing my job...doing what I am paid to be doing and that is to stop some idiots from entering someplace, breaking something or whatever, and some dirtbag comes at me...I'll give him or her the thumping of their life. When I am done...your mama won't know you.
The cops have every right to thump these idiots who also want to do damage and whip on the cops.
Same with these idiots wanting to enter the military bases...protesting, etc.... the korean cops are the first line of defense...so best take a ass whipping from the korean cops than be shot by the MP's should you make it past the korean cops.

they dont deserve to have to put up with being beaten by bamboo sticks, in other riots I've seen steel rods, machetes, gas tanks being used as flamethrowers, riot buses burnt to the ground.

all these civil libiterians(sp) need to pull their head out of their aholes

komtengi,

Speaking as one of the civil libertarians, I have to agree with you in one and only point: if the riot cops are facing bricks being thrown at them, bamboo sticks hitting them, metal rods beating them then yes they should be using whatever force is necessary to BRING THE ATTACKER DOWN. Once the attacker or attackers are down then it becomes a case of handcuffing them and taking them to jail. However, in the clips this simply was not the case. The riot cops were the attackers and the protesters seemed to be for the most part of the non-violent variety. And how can you defend the police who are beating on the lines of captured protesters as they are being marched into the police van? Is that just retribution or something? Oh, that's right, they dared to protest so therefore they are entitled to being beaten even after the protest is over and they've been arrested. See that's where we have a problem: if the protesters are non-violent then violence cannot be used against them. If you check your recent history, police forces in most democratic countries have faced this dilemma: how to disperse protesters who are peaceful in a non-violent manner. What they have resorted to, and still even get raked over the coals for, is pepper spray. If those Korean cops had used pepper spray, I wouldn't be ranting now. However they didn't and chose to use EXCESSIVE force simply for their own amusement. If Korea were a democracy, those cops would now be in jail or at least no longer wearing a badge.

descriptions of the demonstrations and most were along the lines that the people were unarmed, in one it said that someone was in the driver's side and they were breaking the windshield of the car, etc. the video was compiled by a strike org.

Huh?

One of the clips shown there was the Daewoo workers demo back in 2001 I think. I remember seeing the full-length film of it on Korean TV at the time. The protestors were having a sit-down demo at the factory gates. They were simply sitting on the road and chanting.

The police charged and beat anyone they caught to unconsciousness. Literally. They did not stop wacking heads until the man went limp.

I was shocked as I thought that, coming from Belfast, Northern Ireland, that I had been de-sensitized to police brutality. I have seen the police there beat up a lot of people. But those people in Belfast were rioters. Directly trying to harm, hurt and even kill the policemen. Very different from what you see in a Korean demo.

These Daewoo workers were sitting on the road.

Remember that the rioters choose to be there, while the riot cops have no choice in the matter. There's no reason why the police should limit their choice of tactics to be "fair" and equal to whatever weapons the rioters use. Police have a right to protect their lives, and don't have to take foolish risks as a service to the rioters.

Also note that most Koreans can't tell the difference between real life and a video game. If there is a guy on the ground and the other cops are kicking him, you're going to kick him too, so you don't let your buddies get more "points".
