I was thinking today about how horrible an idea it would be to start up a lawn care service in Korea, which led me to wondering what else would be doomed to failure here in the Land of the Morning Calm.

I think a Latin language hagwon would also be doomed.

Driver's ed school? {edited for q-girl - this is just supposed to be a joke about Korean driving habits. please don't get hung up on literality..literalness...literalality.... in this thread.}

What else can you michin saramdeul come up with?

The "I Love Takeshima" Souvenir Shop

BTW, I'd be a regular customer and maybe even a "professional whitie consultant" for the lawn care store.

Latin hagwon? Let's think about that for a minute:

1. Lots of grammar, well-documented, that doesn't change
2. Speaking is a non-issue
3. No pesky native speakers wasting students' time with "incorrect" slang and regional accents
4. No Korean gets an "unfair advantage" by studying abroad or having enthusiasm for learning
5. Dropping "English" curriculum will in no way reduce Korea's ability to communicate internationally.

6. LATIN IS THE PERFECT SUBJECT TO REPLACE "ENGLISH" ON UNI EXAMS!

When I visited cow Island or Udo a little while back I though it would be a really good place to start a venison farm. Koreans don't like innovation when it comes to food at the moment, give it ten years and it might work. Try it now and you'll be poor soon!

You see, I don't think that one or the lawn care service are necessarily awful business ideas. There aren't many people with carpets and lawns, but there's bound to be enough to keep a small team hopping. There would be a lot of travel time involved, but as these customers wouldn't have anywhere else to go, you should be able to charge enough to make it worth your while.

The real problem would be keeping a low profile. Say I were to go into the lawn care/carpet cleaning business. Before long, some snoopy reporter with an agenda would find out here's the headline:

"Enterprising Expat 'Cleans Up' While Koreans Caught Flat-footed!" Evil or Very Mad

Within a month there'd be 23,000 Koreans crawling out of the woodwork with carpet-cleaning & lawn-care credentials from the world's top universities. And they'd all want a piece of my 50-customer pie. Rolling Eyes

I lived next door to a 24-hour carwash last summer.

I don't recommend it. Evil or Very Mad
