I liked it up to the point where you found out what was really going on. From that point on it seemed boring and pointless like you said.

That was a great movie. Lots of suspense with the blind gal being chased by the werewolf creature through the forest.

And the world within a world aspect was fantastic.

William Hurt and Sigourney Weaver are two of my favourite actors, too. They've both done some great movies. William Hurt: Dune, Altered States. Weaver: Alien, 1492 The Conquest of Paradise. Etc.

William Hurt is funny in how slowly he speaks rolling along almost ponderously in that low, contemplative, drone of his. Ennunicating carefully about values, how to be a mensch, and so on.

Yeah the movie pretty much sucked. It was like "oh, yeah, I kinda had an idea what the big secret was..."

The ending to Signs I thought was pretty much lifted from A Prayer for Owen Meany.

this was my reaction through it: SPOILER ALERT

boring boring boring

people talking without contractions

boring boring boring

dead skinned animal on the ground/creepy things (wearing clothes) in the forest. maybe something interesting...

love triangle between three boring people

boring boring boring

the most boring guy wants to go get medicine from the towns outside the haunted forest

boring

the retarded guy stabs the really boring guy. cool.

the village elder sends his blind daughter to go get medicine for the boring guy, knowing full well that she'll need to scale a wall (not to mention that there just might be pitfalls in the woods, like, i don't know, say... i giant purposeless hole?)

creepy monster chases the blind girl through the forest. cool.

we find out that the retarded guy not only discovered the town secret hidden under the floorboards of the room he was locked in, but also managed to escape said locked room in a monster costume completely unnoticed.

we find out that the monster chasing the blind girl through the forest is actually the retarded guy in a costume (thus sucking out the last possibility of anything interesting happening), but is outwitted and outmaneuvered. why he's chasing her through the woods in a monster costume? who knows?

the blind girl makes it through the woods, over the wall, and gets picked up by the dumbest park ranger on the earth. he sees a blind girl climbing out of a wildlife preserve asking him for drugs, and his instincts tell him not only to steal the drugs for her, but to borrow a ladder as well to help her back over the wall.

then the village elders decide it's a good idea to continue lying to their children, and tell them the retarded guy got eaten by monsters. everyone lives happily ever after.

there was a love story hinted at between sigourney weaver and the village elder, but i don't recall that panning out to anything, or did i miss it?

anyway... i'm not a movie snob or anything, but there's a line, and that movie crossed it.

someone mentioned the ending of 'signs'. that gave me a similar feeling. the movie was pretty cool up until we find out that the aliens' weakness is water. lucky for them, when they landed there was no precipitation anywhere on earth. i thought it was dumb.

Yup that was my reaction to both Signs and The Village. Next time I hear a movie hyped as "M. Night Shyamalan's ____________" I'll be passing on it.

Well, as much as I thought Signs was lame I can give it this much:
it beat the pants off of 'Simon Birch'; That adaptation of Irving's book was so bad I wanted to cry out loud in the theatre "For the love of god, make it stop!!!"

M. Knight really needs to stop making movies based entirely on his "color" gimmick.

I've not seen Simon Birch but yeah. It was apparently so horrible Irving not only had his name taken off but had them change the name of the movie.

I thought it was pretty good- a tense atmosphere, bit of a mystery, twist in the tale, and under 2 hours. A pinch of nudity and maybe some helicopters would have been cool, but you can't have it all.

It was also incredibly stupid that these aliens were apparently smart enough to figure out interstellar travel, but they couldn't swing by walmart for some raincoats to save them from the water...duh
