A possible reason for your pay being late could be a lot of parents were late in paying the monthly tuition. A lot of parents pay late or don't even pay at all. Perhaps yor boss was hoping thatat the last moment before paying some parents would pay, but didn't. Then he had to go out and borrow the money to pay you.

Oh also I asked when the summer vacation was going to be. Boss was really stressed out and she said "Didn't you look at the contract??!!!" and I said, yes, the contract says the 1-week summer vacation date will be set by the school. We looked at the contract together. Then she went to the calendar and indicated 3 days in the beginning of august. No, ma'am. A week is 7 days! I just added the thursday and friday to what she indicated, and she didn't argue.

Well done. It seems that so many Korean employers promise time off in contracts, have it written down in ways that can't be changed, but then give no thought or consideration to the fact that X teacher is actually going to be off for X days and they're going to have to get X's days covered. It's like they think we're Korean women or something.

Agreed. She was definitely trying to pull a fast one on you. First the payment and then the high utilities bills and now the holidays!! Rolling Eyes

I think that she isn't intentionally trying to work you over. She is probably doing to you what she has experienced in the past from her employers. You have to tell her that those things won't fly with the foreign teachers.

Pay a day late can be a pain in the butt if you are starting out your job, however for people who have been here for a while and don't live paycheck to paycheck might not even notice. I know that I don't. If she says a day late and it's a day late, I don't see a big problem. If she starts making late payments later though, that's when you need to step up.

Mostly it's disappointing. I'm a businessman, I can handle negotiation. But she was unprofessional (probably inexperienced) and allowed herself to take things personally. She called me "selfish" and got flustered. This is going to make it difficult for us to work together moving forward. It's a sad situation now.

Hmm now she's trying to make you feel guilty. It states all the details on your contract and you're the selfish one!! Shocked

I know how you feel especially about the disappointed feeling. We have all been there. We all thought that we had the ideal job and ideal boss but things have changed and I personal have learned never, never, never to trust any Korean boss.

I know that I'm preaching doom and gloom but in the most cases of what you read about here on Dave's all that is needed is the teacher to stand up and say, "No, you can't treat me like that!"

Maybe if everybody did that then we wouldn't have any problems? Just wishful thinking! Wink

Last year when I worked for those companies that provided elementary schools with teachers, they tried to do that to me, I said "no" and they argued that they couldn't help it. And I said I couldn't help not working a few days. We came to an instant agreement

I had a friend who was paid constantly late. They tried once and he didn't say anything about it, so they continued to do it again and again and again (His excuse was that he didn't want to rock the boat in that he thought he was the highest paid foreigner in his town, which was not true).
But over time, he was late with his rent and bills (they would only pay him about 1/3 of his salary).

The truth is, you MUST put your foot down once you sign the contract. Because you would be setting a precedence that it is ok to do it to the next guy or they would continue to make excuses to do it over and over again.

Exactly. If they can use you once then they will always do it. Once they think that you are easy, then that's it!!

I sympathise. It's very difficult to work under or alongside someone who has been disrespectful. It's especially complicated when there are language barriers-- I find it difficult to express my objections, and sometimes I'm offended by remarks that are not intended to be hurtful (e.g., my co-teacher spat "That's ridiculous!" when he meant to say "I'm surprised!" When I offered him the benefit of the doubt and explained the situation, he was quite taken aback.)

My style, and this has worked for me so far, is to be firm on what is important to me, but to keep things very friendly. If someone called me "selfish" I would probably say "We can discuss the contract, and you can evaluate my job performance, but I can't let you talk about my personality that way. I will do my best for you as a teacher, but right now I'm looking out for my best interests, and I only want to pay for what I think is fair."

By the way, were you joking about that "doorman's kim chi fund?"

The "utilities" bill is itemized and has about 20 numbers on it. I got a partial translation that included elevator maintenance, hallway cleaning, repairs, etc. I can only speculate what the other numbers were. But it's a big office building with several employees who need feeding.

To be honest every contract i have entered into I've had to pay the apartment fee...fair enough i suppose as i do live there, i considered the bills i would pay....

Last year my apartment maintanence fee was 80 000 a month on average(it was a big apartment) but I just sucked it up and paid....

I think you are being a bit picky with the apartment thing...it is a normal expense, just make sure you see the bill

Personally, I think some of the kids posting here don't have a clue how to make personal relations work for them instead of against them. Congratulations, you were right and she was wrong. She was 1 day late with the pay. Enjoy your victory.

I am paying "shared" electric, gas, and water bills with a building full of mostly stores, offices, and several restaurants. The 120k/month utilities bill represents *their* usage. If everybody is sharing the bills, I should at least have A/C that I can run 24 hours, plus an artificial waterfall in my apartment (for atmosphere) and several stand-up video games, so I can use an equal amount...
