But I do feel sorry for Tom.

I can't imagine a Catholic (for example) going on TV to promote a movie during all the priest/child abuse cases a couple of years ago and being challenged on his/her religious beliefs.

Agreed. And the Catholic church has done a lot of other bad stuff over the centuries too.

>. While Cruise has a point about unnecessarily drugging people into oblivion, L. Ron Hubbard was in pretty tight with, of all people, Aleister Crowley.

I don't have much respect for someone who thinks psychiatry is nonsense or useless or whatever. That person obviously has not ever been directly affected, in himself or in a family memeber or close friend, by a pychiatric illness, and thus has not seen the benefits medicine can provide.

Still, I don't know how anyone could be ignorant to the benefits and relief provided to millions of people by improvements in these drugs.

Yes, to quote wikipedia:

Charles Manson, serial killer who joined Scientology in prison before starting his own cult

A list of fine minds if I ever saw one.

I was disappointed to read:

William S. Burroughs, author, Beat Generation icon (later denounced Scientology)

But he was probably high on bug juice at the time. Cool

From Wikipedia:

The 1970s also saw Burroughs join, then leave the Church of Scientology [2], which became the subject of his book "Ali's Smile/Naked Scientology". Gysin once suggested that Burroughs was one of the few people who made more money from Scientology than Scientology made from him.

VM a one-time "scientologist" eh ??? Well that's news to me.

I know he's acted as a guest lecturer in Philosophy at a number of different UK Universities in recent years, has an interest in guys like WB Yeats & ummmmm ... the OTO Twisted Evil ... Order of the Golden Dawn, Christian "mysticism" etc.

As far as the Scientology nonsense goes, he likely gave this jive up when he realized ...

... he wasn't L. Ron Hubbard's long lost brother after all ...

Video: Scientology Exposed - L. Ron Hubbard On Drugs
In light of Tiny Tom Cruise's rantings in the media about the benefits and wonders of Scientology, we decided it was a good time to re-release the antidote to Scientology L. Ron Hubbard on Drugs.

Was the founder of Scientology and the drug rehab program Narconon a user of Drugs and a Practitioner of Black Magick?

Was L. Ron Hubbard working for Naval Intelligence and involved in the drug induced mind control predecessors of MK Ultra? Has Scientologist money been used to import heroin and cocaine?

Did L. Ron Hubbard really say not smoking enough cigarettes will cause lung cancer?

Why are Scientologists filming events like Canada's Cannabis Day and the Seattle Hempfest
? Are Scientologists planning to take over the world and make it Drug-Free?

Watch this fascinating video from Detroit's Red-Eye Rising Productions to find out more ...

yeah interesting stuff. I got in touch with the scientology place in manchester I cant say it really impressed me. All seemed a bit odd. There didnt really seem anything profound about it's thinking as far as I can see. I'm really into counselling and psychotherapy. Ive done a degree in psychology and am now studying counselling.

The place near me do this test when they ask you loads of questions then give you this graph of ratings from normal to abnormal on different scales eg aggressiveness. Then theres a process called auditing wheres you work with a partner and close your eyes and talk about an experience from the past you consider painful. then you talk about it over and over again and go through it. this is based on an idea that these events stop you in the present by creating 'charge' like a nasty reaction inseide your bosy which is not your personality but just a feeling stopping you which needs to be removed. the auditing process removes this charge then leading to a state of 'clear'. i didnt do the course but only cosy 20 pounds and you work with a partner. i just dont have time really. im too busy.

i want to ask my counselling teacher how this process is all regarded. is clear meant to represent some sort of stability and maturity??? i dont really know. the person i spoke to cleaimed to be 'clear'.

there were many anti psychiatry books. some claiming psychiatry lead to the rise of hitler. very extreme. i can see some argument against the use of drugs though. i recently read an article saying how counselling was much more beneficial to youths that drugs and in some cases drugs could lead to suicide.

the whole thing didnt really seem harmful although im sure psychiatrists could claim great offence. the people there though who were into it just did nt really command much respect from me. seemed like theyd just latched onto something

anyway, any other thoughts are good. interesting post

Since this thread starting I saw for the first time Scientologists giving free audits with their e-meters.
They've rented retail space on Yonge st @ Bloor in Toronto and are there in full force.
And they had a booth at the Ottawa Ex(ibition) (summer fair).
I also finished reading 'The Road to Xenu' and it's defintely recommended reading.

The classic satire on man-made religion based on "a bunch of lies" and the destructiveness of scientific technology combined with soul-killing stupidity is Vonnegut's "Cat's Cradle." I vaguely recall wondering who might be the "wampeter of my karass" (or something like that...)
