Anyone else following this?
More importantly, has anyone downloaded the mod and cares to comment on it?

I was waiting for GTA:SA to go on sale before picking it up, but now I'm wondering if I shouldn't go and get a copy before it gets pulled from the shelves or something. My main game suppliers these days are Walmart and EB, and I think they'll cave fairly easily if there's enough of a commotion.

It's pretty big news... I figured everyone knew about it.

There is an x-rated mod going around for GTA: San Andreas.
The person making this mod available says that all he is doing is providing a 'key' for download that unlocks x-rated coding already on the GTA disk.
GTA disputes this. Yesterday they said it was a mod somebody made (sounds about right), but today Reuters is reporting that Rockstar is now saying it's the work of 'hackers'. This doesn't make much sense, but there are no details. Meanwhile parents groups are screaming that the company is trying to slip an x-rated game past the rating system...

All in all bad news for PC Gamers and those who make and play mods...
Sad

Porn is easy to find on the internet so if I want to be tittilated [sp] I don't need to download a game mod, but I want to see for myself what all the hubbub is about- is it a serious problem or is it on par with taking the clothes off Ken and Barbie dolls and sticking them in suggestive positions?

Hmmm....well, I dunno. Seems that it was included in the game (code is present), but was never meant to hit the streets. That is pretty lame though...RS games must have known that modders would be looking into the code pretty carefully in order to do their work...and the "explicit" material couldn't have been hidden very well.

Personally, this is just one more reason why I am glad I don't and won't own this game. Yeah, I generally play violent games, but they don't sell on that premise. I didn't see any ads for Doom 3 saying "A bloodthirsty, gut-blasting experience", or HL2 "Kill nazi-like facists".

The GTA series has yet to do something really innovative, both technically and gameplay-wise. Boring, lacklustre graphics and yes, some fun driving (but nothing that can't be done in another game) make it easily forgettable. It will go down in gaming history only for the controversy. It's a blackeye to gaming and reduces gaming to pron.

I just installed the game last night and did install the Hot Coffee mod. You have two options when installing the mod. You can either set it to go right to the 'dates' scenes or have that portion be part of regular game play. I chose the second one so I haven't seen the questionable material yet.

This is the first GTA game I've played, and like Demo says, the graphics aren't anything special, so I don't imagine those scenes will be either.

For what it's worth (and it may not be worth very much), Rockstar Games is denying the modder's allegations that the scenes were there and the mod only unlocked them. Rockstar claimed on Wednesday that hackers were responsible for altering the code.. New York Times article here or a more comprehensive story from Reuters here.

I haven't looked at Draven's links so maybe they touch on this as well but the latest to speak out is Hillary Clinton...
http://pc.ign.com/articles/633/633544p1.html

And Demo, my thoughts were the same as yours about GTA until somebody gave me a copy of Vice City; There's no doubt in my mind these are some of the finest pc games made... and sure they have questionable subject matter- yet The Godfather wins Oscars, Reservoir Dogs has a cult following, Gangsta rap is a multi-million dollar industry... I think it would be hypocritical to praise them and condemn this game, which does have an ESRB rating of Teen.

And in terms of creativity and quality, the game has earned game critics' praise:

http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/grandtheftautosanandreas

(However it is interesting to note that this is one of the first times I've seen a discrepancy between critics' and users' rating)

(Of course the above presupposes my belief that Hot Coffee is a user mod rather than secret mini game hidden on the disk with Rockstar's knowledge and approval; The answer to that should be clear soon).

It should be fairly easy to determine if the hacker mod contains the game itself or if it simply unlocks a hidden easter egg. Is the binary big enough to contain the video sequence? If it is pretty small, it would no doubt just unlock the easter egg.

The zipped mod file is 1.1 Mb, so infer from that what you will. To see a screenie from the part of the game in question, for research purposes only, of course, go here. While not pron in the link per se, you certainly can get a sense of what it's all about.

1.1 MB and there is some question as to wether it was in the game or not?!?!

Come on....one can't squeeze enough code into 1.1MB to do what has ben done. Textures, models, AI, not to mention raw code....

No man...it was alredy in there. RS games hasn't a chance against this one.

Yeah, and that's sad. I can't believe anything could get put on disc without the explicit knowledge of RS managment, which means they've gone and put a gun to their head... then again, this is now THE game that your parents don't want you to have or play which makes it on just about every teen's must-have list... I wonder how sales will be doing...

KofK....thanks for making my point.

No "death", "kill", "blood"...nothing. All I see is fighting evil....going all the way to Hell to do it. Sounds pretty cool to me....resisting evil is a great way to live and play. Cool

Which brings me full circle to what I was saying before....I will never own this game and I hope RS gets what they deserve.

It sounds like a "A bloodthirsty, gut-blasting experience" to me. Why else would anyone play Doom? There's nothing else to do but kill.

I'm not suprised that something would get left on the disc - you have multiple people working on a project over a long time, porting the game, rewriting code, making last-minute changes under a deadline set by businessmen. Happens all the time. That's where most "bugs" come from.

To their credit, the stuff was locked away.

By the same token, 1.1mb zipped sounds a little big to be only unlocking something that is already there. Assuming all the textures and models used were already on the game disc, and not having seen this hot coffee in action, its possible the kid wrote the mod.

No matter who wrote it, everyone is talking about it, and you can't buy that kind of publicity. It might even be a clever stunt. Regardless, this game is going to sell.

This thread reminded me of a cartoon about Ashcroft (it had a sort of sex vs. violence theme), so I went looking for it.

I didn't find it.

however, I did come across this one:

If you've not seen it yet, you can check out some screens here.

The guy who made it has a site here.

I loaded it up for the Xbox version of GTA:SA, but the main issues with it (as it exists in the "combo mod" version) are that you've got to start a whole new game (old save files don't work with the mod) and the wanted level is turned off. I'm a good ways into the game and don't want to start over, and GTA's just not the same without the cops chasing you, so I just checked out the mod then went back to my original save.

I believe the code for the "hot coffee" minigame was always in the game, but the author admits changing the skins of some of the girls to get rid of their clothing.

It's a serious non-issue, really. It's not even titilating or erotic in the slightest. If anything, it's amusing for all of CJ's tough guy talk, and the line the game gives you if you "lose" the game. Smile
