I watched it last night. Jules Verne was way ahead of his
time. Tom Cruise was pretty good. I felt the movie lacked
depth. Also the CAM I watched was missing the last 30 sec.
narration. Can anyone tell me why the aliens all died?
I thought Batman was much better. |

Oops, you're right. Both good authors. Although H.G. Wells
wasn't as sexy as Dawn Wells (Maryann from Gilligan's Island)

Nah, Nah, Nah, No!
I watched this with my GF at the theatre the day it came out and we both left the place unimpressed.
The lightening storms were cool and so was Tim Robbins. That's about it.
What was the deal with his son? They invest half the movie in this supposedly 'difficult' relationship with his son, but completely blow it off for what reason?
The 'Aliens' looked like something ripped from the original star wars. The ending was unsatisfactory and was delivered with no impact whatsoever....BUT, by that time I think everyone in our theatre felt that their 2 hour investment was sufficient, nobody wanted to sit through another 15 minutes of this tripefest so it was just as well that they ended it as abruptly as they did.
Go see Batman or Madagascar, they're both worth the won. |

Yep, bacteria. They say something like millions of humans died years and years ago from the same bacteria but evolution has allowed us to become immune. The aliens are new to our world and they arent immune like us.
Make sense? |

Now that more people have seen it I can elaborate:
What I found to be really scary was the sound effects for the tripods (the booming foghorn) coupled with their appearance at night and coupled with the scenes of people fleeing in panic. The scenes that scared me were the ones around the Hudson Ferry- the crowds of people panicking, dumped into the water etc. gave me the willies. In other words it was the panic of the people that really frightened me. It was very well done.
Sure, the movie ended suddenly, but what do you expect?
It follows the plot of the book.
Yes, Tom and Dakota 'over-acted', and yes the sub-plot about the irresponsible father trying to find redemption with his family is lame, but you know what?
I find they didn't detract from the movie. I found it easy to let them slide by and they didn't take away from my overall enjoyment of the movie.
It's almost like they were stuck in there for the critics, but if you didn't want to you didn't have to worry about it.
I wouldn't say it's a better movie than Batman begins but I would say that I enjoyed watching it more. |
