if i courier my laptop home will it get held up at canada customs? will i have to pay duty? how much? i am absolutely mystified by the warnings i have been getting about sending it home...
i bought it 6 months ago, i am considered a non-resident for tax purposes, and i have been away from canada for more than 5 years.
it kind of irks me that i might have to pay duty on it: when i decided to buy a computer, i wanted to buy one from the states or canada (because the same computers were way cheaper there) and have it shipped but, ostensibly because of tariff agreements, i couldn't.
so i was forced to buy a more expensive one here - and now that i am returning to canada, i have to pay duty on a computer that i had to pay way more for because canada wouldn't let me buy one of theirs ? nuts!
any advice on how to get my laptop home would be appreciated. taking it with me isn't really an option because it would suck to have to haul it on my back through 3 countries plus a visit to the himalayas. it's a jumbo 4kg laptop! |

It sounds like you are already well-acquainted with the rules. You are returning to re-establish residence and therefor are allowed to bring duty-free a certain amount of goods/personal household items provided they are under $10, 000 total, are for personal use, and at least 6 months old (or something similar). You declare the items when you clear customs on arrival. No idea what happens if you send a high value item ahead- you should check the customs website, i'm sure there are forms for this sort of thing.

you are right - i visited the canada customs site a few days ago but i was only able to find the information i mentioned but no concrete directives regarding exactly what i needed to do for shipping stuff...
anyway, thanks for the link! i'll print out the form and send include it with my package. hopefully it will get through with no hassles |

They don't want to tell us these things, or we could figure a way around it. They'd rather leave it up in the air for us to make a mistake so they can charge us a fee. |

Wow, and I thought I was cynical about bureaucracy... |
