I have a similar question...
Can I bring my Samsung phone from Canada to Korea, and have it set up with a local Korean cellular company??? Has anyone tried this? ... just trying to cut some costs for when I arrive next month ... |

i wrote this up for another forum i go to...but it will maybe help u out. it applies to using korean phones in the USA. as for canada, im not sure if bell and telus allow foreign ESN's on their system.
Q: How can I use a phone from Asia in N. America?
A: This can be a bit tricky to answer. S. Korea and Japan use CDMA (Japan has a new WCDMA/GSM mode, but it is still devloping. The rest of Asia for the most part uses GSM. If you want to use a CDMA phone from South Korea, it must be a phone that is compatible with SK Telecom (011). Why? Because SK compatible phones use the same frequency that Verizon uses (800 mhz).
That is the first step, next you must get your phone programmed and activated with Verizon. This step can be solved by either going to a cell phone store in K-town and asking if they are able to do this...or use a place from online.
If you want to use a GSM phone from Asia (this is much easier to do than CDMA), you must make sure that the phone is unlocked so that you may use it with your GSM carrier.
Q: Where can I purchase Korean phones that will work in N. America?
A: Check out Wireless Imports or Celly Spot for a selection of some imported Korean phones already programmed to work on Verizon. Also check out those stores for programming your Korean CDMA phones. It's expensive, but can be done. |

Japan don't use CDMA that widely - their phone networks are a mix of PDC (Personal Digital Cellular - NTT DoCoMo, Vodafone KK and KDDI all used this IIRC, and it was a TDMA based technology which is now all but obsolete) and several 3G solutions. NTT DoCoMo use their own system called FOMA which is almost-but-not-quite compatible with WCDMA networks. It'd be risky to buy a phone from them for use in the States. Vodafone KK use WCDMA as in their European networks - you can buy a 3G phone in London, take it to Tokyo and it'll work. Get it unlocked and it may well work on a GSM network in the US, depending what bands it supports, but beware - GSM bands in the US are different from a lot of the rest of the world. KDDI do use CDMA2000 1x as in the States, but I don't know how transferrable handsets are between them (i.e. how compatible the networks are). Note that PDC is utterly incompatible with anything else, anywhere. |

Get your brother to ask what bandwidth Cantel or whatever uses and shop for the same phone here. That's what I recommend anyway. There's still no guarantee that it'll work with whichever carrier you choose. I can tell you that my Samsung(CDMA - forget the model number) wouldn't have worked with the three different companies I asked in my city in Canada. I tried and they all said no, but that was back in 2001, I think. Maybe there's more compatibility nowadays. |
