Ok, now I have to admit that if I were Israeli, this would weird me out a bit.

The current president of Syria, a nation not known for its democratic tendencies, and which has always "had issues" with Israel is President Bashar al-Assad:

Now, ol' Bashar is not the handsomest guy in the world, but I wouldn't say he's butt-ugly. However, he bears an astonishing resemblance to another influential character in Jewish/Israeli history:

Now, am I the only one who notices a resemblance here? Shocked

1. From a strictly objective perspective, what a stupid comparison. Look at the ears, eyes, brows and ridges, chin structure, and absence/presence of a ridge at the chin. The only thing similar between these two is the jaw line and that's it.

Well, since at least one other person also noted a resemblance, it's hardly a 'stupid' comparison. The thin mustache, weak jaw line, and close-set eyes all denote a similarity in appearance between the two individuals. I pointed out a coincidence, nothing more.

Nazi and Arab: recall how one American magazine published a photo of Saddam and deliberately airbrushed the sides of his moustache to make him more closely resemble Hitler.

I recall no such magazine or airbrushed photo, nor do I come from a culture as fervently obsessed with the Arab world as the American one, which would compell me to be interested in such a photo or draw significance from it. I made no comments that could be interpreted as associating Bashar al-Assad, or anyone in the Arab world for that matter, with Nazism. I merely pointed out what I thought was an odd and (somewhat humorous) coincidence:

2. If your sincere, then this would be a perfect example of how "culture conditions the colors we see" to use a title from a semiotic essay.

You know nothing about me, so you know nothing about what culture I come from or how my culture perceives Arabs. I only noted what appears to be a visual similarity in the physical features of Bashar al-Assad and Heinrich Himmler. As such, your comments are pretentious and ridiculous.

...and anybody who uses the word "semiotics", without cringing, should be regarded with a large grain of salt. Rolling Eyes

I don't see it; ears, eyes, nose, mouth, cheek and chin structures don't really match. They do seem to have a similare expression... blank that is....?

Wow. I think I've gone as much as 2.5 hours in one stretch without thinking about an Arab, Arab food, Arabic numbers or 1001 Arabian Nights.

Just curious. Other Americans: How long have you gone without thinking about anything Arabic?

I can recall that back in my hometown, there was a guy who had a somewhat similar appearance to Adolf Hitler. We used to laugh and joke about it behind his back, but I doubt very much that any one of us would think that because of any similarity in appearance, there may be similarities in character. Why you would draw such conclusions is a mystery.

I don't see that much of a resemblance between the 2 original photos either. The German guy has a much fatter head. Wink

I can however see a lot more similarities between the policies of the current Bush administration and those of the Nazi regime.

And that really does creep me out. Shocked
