Does anyone have any recommendations/info on where/how one
can get TEFL/TESOL cert. while in Korea?
I'm currently teaching in Gongju(close to Daejon) and would like to pursue this in my area if possible.

also, if anyone has any info on TEFL international? I was
comtemplating the Bordeaux 1 month program after my contract
expires in early spring. I've heard that TEFL certs are a waste
of time unless Trinity/Celta.

all the best,
cwilliam

Before planning ANY TEFL/TESL course, I suggest you read the following.

http://www.efl-law.com/Tesol_Certificates.html

If you can find the time, have about 1,500,000 won plus the airfare and housing costs, and if your vacation schedule fits, then do the CELTA or Trinity. Or better yet, spend more money and take more time to do a semester-long course at Sookmyung womens' university or the University of Saskatchewan (sorry if I misspelled it) -- but those are twice that cost.

Some might argue that if you are a teacher who really cares about the education you recieve, and your students, you will take something like the CELTA. I ignore all such crap talk, because one could argue that a teacher who really cares would have gotten a full degree plus certification to teach -- not base their entire education on a 1 month quickie course like the CELTA or another. These courses are merely a feather in your cap -- probably based on an age group you aren't teaching (thinking in terms of Korean hagwons), and hardly a full education comparable with a degree plus teaching certification.

This is the course I am taking now: http://www.teflcorp.com/ol-prices.htm

My reasons and justifications for taking my course instead of the CELTA or TEFL International's full course are listed in the thread linked below:

Yeah, saw your statements on another thread. Sadly, I consider these short courses or on-line courses to be a bit of a scam. The companies doing them know their true value and are taking advantage of the situation people such as you find themselves in.

While I do see a value in on-line teaching and training, some things require practicum and interaction more than others and don't think a one month teacher training course can be done on-line effectively.

I do understand you are just jumping through hoops put in front of you in the most effecient way you found.

I get to watch video of teachers teaching, as a part of my course. It's not merely studying paper. I can jump online and ask questions of my trainer during working hours. I've done this. No, I don't get the "feedback" about my teaching, but as I've mentioned before, I can sign up for that and go do that, if I choose.

I can definately see how online courses would irk you. Especially because Korea (and other countries) accept on-line degrees. It effectively takes you, the trainer, out of the equation and can cause you to lose your job.

Just curious -- when will you begin to teach the CELTA, and if not, then why not?

Yes, I know. I've seen the videos.

Ys, but you only get feedback on what you ask, which may or may not even be germaine. A trainee or student, by default, doesn't necessarily know what is important to ask. This is a weakness of that type of program.

Why you are making this personal, I don't know. Fear of losing a job has never prevented me from speaking truthfully. It has, in fact, caused me to lose jobs. Not a fear I have as an honest life is more important to me than a wealthy one.

Hadn't considered working for Cambridge.... Did you have a point?

I was the trainer for TEFL Intl. in France August to October last year and was appointed the director there again in April of this year. I did not end up going back there. You can contact me for info or visit my website.
