The Korean military service program is coming under some flak after the killings of eight soldiers last month by a bullied conscript.

In past times Korean youth thought nothing of tough treatment for a year or two.

Now, the 'Starcraft Generation' are not too happy about the expected physical abuse.

"There have been so many reports of violence against new recruits," he said. "My generation has been pampered while growing up and we'll find it hard to take the physical and verbal abuse you seem to get in the military".

The army insists that it is changing with the times, and will not tolerate physical or verbal abuse of juniors. It says it has to be sensitive to the needs of a better educated and more affluent generation.

My husband told me some horror stories when he was in the Army and Special Forces. When he was a junior, he was beaten up severly for apparently missing a goal shot in a soccer game by a superior. But when he gained rank , he found that same guy who beat him up and pummeled him into the ground because now he had rank over him and it was allowed. It's a real rat race and you can pretty much do anything you want with higher rank and not get into trouble.

what's wrong with verbal abuse? i think it's fine to some extent. This is an army for god's sake. Do they want to them to be polite them and not say one mean thing to them... Physical abuse is different though that is something that you do not need to do.[/u]

My fiance told me that one of our colleagues was sexually abused. He was forced to share a sleeping bag (neked) with his platoon leader, and the guy would fondle him.. Also had to pleasure him orally.

Koreans are mean to eachother. the army gives them an even better excuse. Korea is naturally a society of misery wherein people are constantly trying to assert higher rank/status over eachother in a myriad of ways.

I can only imagine how hellish it is amongst the womens ranks.
