What was the line Mel Gibson's character in Lethal Weapon?

"Hate them right back" or something to that effect. LOL

Unfortunately it is a business a mile before it's a school. Otherwise wouldn't it be nice to have kids to have actually want to be there?

And the crap they learn so young is sad. Hate America = all whites.

Hate Japan.

Actually Koreans hate each other. They are full of hatred. Sad society generates sad kids.

I certainly wouldn't be so bothered by it as to start a thread on Dave's.

I had a kid who said he hated me, whenever I asked him to sit down.

I told him that i don't hate him but I am very disapproving of him disrupting my class. That I can understand that he doesn't enjoy coming to class, but it is not my fault that he is here. It is his fault for preventing the 11 other kids who want to learn from learning, and so he can either hate me in silence anf sit down, or he can explain to my boss why he hates me.

Tended to sit down and shut up.

I'd punish him. Taking an aloof approach or shrugging it off with humour sends a very clear and understandable message to the kid that he is allowed to openly disrespect you. That's bad for the kid. Ignoring his misbehaviour or trying to butter him up will be bad for him. At best, it will only make him partially obedient.

And here's an important lesson that took me a long time to fully grasp: PARTIAL OBEDIENCE IS DISOBEDIENCE!

Of course, in hagwon chop-shops you often don't have the time, energy and support to shoot for anything but partial obedience. But, if you see what you do as more than just a job, and you really want to have an impact on your students' lives, you've got to discipline them effectively.

I used to think of behaviour management and class control as tedious chores that kept getting in the way of the teaching, but I now see these things as every bit as important as the teaching itself. Perhaps even moreso. Discipline is critical not only to their academic development, but to their growth as people also.

i guess part of me wants to be liked by the student

I've always suspected that teachers who put on an "I don't care what they think of me" attitude are either full of it, or just plain bad teachers. I definitely want my students to like me. It makes the job much more fun, and it brings out the best in the students as well.

My favorite way to deal with such a thing is to bat my eyes at the child and say in a thick, syrupy voice, "Well, I LOOOOOOVE you!" followed by a couple of really noisy air kisses. Then I make sure to often tell the kid exactly how much I love him/her, especially when in front of other kids. I've won over quite a few kids who were only hating me in the first place just to get attention. And the others soon learn that the only way to get the teacher to stop yelling "I love you" down the hallway and blowing air kisses is to STOP acting like a little twerp.
