...a mediocre talent like Kurt Cobain becomes the object of worship on thousands of t-shirts around the globe while the passing of a true musical genius like Elliott Smith goes more or less unnoticed?
T.A.N.J.

Well, maybe that's about to change:

"Elliott Smith Commemorated with Tribute CD"
http://www.aversion.com/news/news_article.cfm?news_id=4670

Don't Go Down

i met a girl
snowball in hell
she was hard
and as cracked as the liberty bell

and i got her to
come on and move in with me
and i said i'll find a better place
where we can spend eternity

but don't go down
don't go down
stay with me, baby stay

her momma called me a thief
and her dad
called himself commander in chief

i fought him off with my love
but i knew the sense of worthlessness she would have to rise
above

don't go down
don't go down
stay with me, baby stay
don't go down
don't go down
stay with me, baby stay

she had a dream
woke up in shock
she had seen
her own body outlined in chalk

and i split the scene, the globe it spun
and her ghost beamed down to kiss me
with a message from the sun

don't go down
don't go down
stay with me, baby stay
don't go down
stay with me, baby stay
don't go down
stay with me, baby stay

It was indeed sad. Elliott Smith was a unique and necessary voice.

Cobain may be a few things but I don't think he's mediocre.

If Elliot Smith didn't have what it takes to reach the audience that Nirvana did then that must say something about the originality of the music he's producing.
Cobain is still a part of music history, Smith is not.

Personally, I know a lot of people who by all rights should be famous....they are one of a kind and are doing (were doing anyhow) some really great, original things.

It ain't fair and it ain't supposed to be.

Time and place man....time and place.

Cobain was the antidote to the awful state of music after the early 90's....we were all being *poison*ed! (lol)

And then fire shot down
From the sky in bolts
Like shining blades
Of a knife.
And it ripped
Right through the flesh
Of the children of the sun
And the moon
And the earth.
And some Indian god
Sewed the wound up into a hole,
Pulled it round to our belly
To remind us of the price we pay.
And Osiris and the gods of the Nile
Gathered up a big storm
To blow a hurricane,
To scatter us away,
In a flood of wind and rain,
And a sea of tidal waves,
To wash us all away,
And if we don't behave
They'll cut us down again
And we'll be hopping around on one foot
And looking through one eye

Thats what I call lyrics

Cobain opened the door so you could actually hear about people like Elliott Smith, try and remember that. Nirvana ruled.

Jaco Pastorius, I understand, was beat to death and left to die in a Miami gutter by two drunk guys in a bar who had no idea who they had just killed.

And didn't Mozart die in poverty and wasn't he buried in an unmarked grave for the homeless?

Kurt Cobain was my first real influence on guitar (The Beatles were too difficult at the time), and although his stuff doesn't sound so amazing now I'm no longer 14 years old, he'll always be great to me.

I liked Smith, and have three of his albums, but he's merely a gifted singer/songwriter rather than a milestone in musical history.

How about some other oft-forgotten greats who died too young, like Keith Moon (see avatar), Dennis Wilson, Layne Staley, Shannon Hoon...hell, the list is way too long.

I didn't respect Cobain for his influence. There was a TV show I saw years ago, where a few young fans said, "I respect the way he killed himself," and "I want to die like him."
