London Mayor Ken Livingstone has blamed Western foreign policy in the Middle East for fomenting terrorism.

He accused the West of interfering in the region as long ago as World War I in order to maintain control of oil supplies.

Mr Livingstone said this had produced Islamic terrorism and the likes of Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda.

He said a lot of young people in Britain were outraged by the double standards in Western foreign policy.

This was reflected in America's support for Israel and detentions without trial in the Guantanamo Bay prison camp in Cuba, he said.

He exlained: "We have propped up unsavoury governments, we have overthrown ones that we didn't consider sympathetic.

"And I think the particular problem we have at the moment is that in the 1980s the Americans recruited and trained Osama bin Laden.

"They taught him how to kill, to make bombs and sent him off to kill the Russians in Afghanistan.

"They didn't give any thought to the fact that once he had done that, he might turn on his creators."

The Mayor said he condemned all suicide bombings.

But he said he understood why Palestinians might resort to the tactic against Israel.

He has also paid tribute to the "swift" and "caring" action taken by the emergency services and transport networks since the London attacks but added that some transport services will remain disrupted for some time.

Mr Livingstone went on to urge Londoners to remain on alert.

He said: "It could happen next week. It may not happen for another four years."

He's an IDIOT...I saw that years back before he even became mayor.

He is an example of an over PC, apologetic liberal socialist anti-semite.
And he has just produced exactly the sort of response the terrorists wanted.

His next statement will probably be along the lines of..'We should let in a lot more msulim terrorists into the U.K, to help with international understanding. And we should help arm Palestinian freedom fighters in their struggle against Israel'.

While embracing Islamic clerics who sanction such actions, and accusing anyone who criticises said clerics of 'Islamophobia.' A tragedy that Londoners have to put up with this PC imbecile as their mayor.

Livingstone, who earned the nickname Red Ken for his left-wing views, won widespread praise for a defiant response which helped unite London after the bombings. But he has revived his reputation for courting controversy in recent days.

I have been a suppoter of Red Ken for some of his views, but I'm extremely angry with him for this bollocks.
Capitalism does not = Western culture. It's time the effete left wing(liberals) woke up to that.
The effete left have to be prepared to admit that mickey mouse Eastern religious bollocks aren't the answer either. Gandhi was a an anti African racist that you can stick where the sun don't shine. The Dalai Lama makes the Pope look like a liberal on social issues, wake up you idiots, stop being ashamed of your culture.
Your culture gave you Marx, Lenin, FDR, Huey Long, Jimmy Hoffa these are the views you want to push.
There's nothing wrong with Western Culture, it's bloody successful. Capitalism is the problem & capitalism is not a Western concept, it's universal.
Wake up you fag conservatives & liberals.

Joo Rip's rabid patriotism is no surprise, but EB??

Ghandi was an anti-African racist, and the Dalai Lama makes the Pope look Liberal???

Mate, you're going to have to back that one up.

The Dalai Lama owned slaves. He and his fellow monks ran Tibet for their own pleasure while Tibetans were starving, illiterate, and dying of disease. Kicking him out and cleaning things up was one of the best things China ever did (even if they only did it to get control of the uranium there). But I don't know his political views.

Well, I thought I was the only one who thought that. He's worth another thread - Gandhi - debunking the myth.

Oh certainly there's been a hell of a lot of whitewashing about Gandhi. It wasn't all sunshine and roses, and he was also partially responsible for the creation of Pakistan in the first place due to his bungling and ill treatment of Jinnah.

And let's not even get into the Mother Theresa myth, which Christopher Hitchens has taken apart pretty well.

All the history books I've read have territorial China who invaded and colonized the Tibetans.. forcing a mass exodus of the Tibetan people fleeing around the globe along with their Dalai Lama (who most Tibetans carry around pictures of the Dalai Lama everywhere they go). If you go to Nepal/India or even NYC.. you'll meet tons and tons of Tibetans just waiting until the day they get sovereignty again to go back to their homelands (as they seem to think the colonizing Chinese are just going to leave).

Anyhow.. never heard of your version before.. where'd you study that?

This guy seems balanced enough - doesn't make old Tibet and the old order (including the Dalai Lama) a haven of equality.

I know next to nothing about Tibetan history but a month ago when I was uploading history articles for a wiki that I work on every once in a while I'd see an event like "Tibetan soldiers take the city of x", "Tibet expands into the territory of x" and so on, just like any other country.
